The most beautiful tented camps in the Moroccan desert

Did you know that the Sahara desert is almost as big as the entire United States? Is so. That is on its own impressive enough, and then creative entrepreneurs also create the most beautiful oases in the form of nomad tent camps. The dream. Three of the most beautiful (private) tent camps in the Moroccan desert: truly bucket list material.

Luxury desert camp Marhaba

Luxury desert camp Marhaba

The private camp thatDesert Luxury Camp is an unparalleled luxury glamping adventure and perfect for a night or three: two nights in one of the luxury tents and one night in the Skoura Oasis (we'll come back to that). Fly to Marrakech, spend a few days there and be picked up by a private driver from Desert Luxery Camp in the early morning: it is no less than a six-hour drive to the camp. A six-hour but beautiful drive along mountains, through valleys on winding roads and with breathtaking views. In the afternoon you make a pit stop: to stretch your legs and have a bite to eat. To reach camp by sunset. And then you immediately know why you did it. Indescribable. The camp in the middle of the Sahara desert is a dream – the ultimate nomad experience, but glamped up. Luxury, to the max. The food is incredibly good, the staff uber-sweet and the beds comfortable. The tents even have full bathrooms with hot showers, electrical outlets and blankets.

And then? Then you walk through the desert with sunrise, ride camels, visit the Skoura Oasis (Then you immediately understand where the dreamy connotation of the word 'oasis' comes from, and you travel to Todra Gorge – a narrow gorge in the eastern part of the High Atlas Mountains – to view the water and have a bite to eat.

But the evenings in the camp itself are the most unforgettable of all.

Stone Desert Camp Scarabeo

Stone Desert Camp Scarabeo

The better unplugging starts with one or two nights in the beautiful Stone Desert glamping of Scarabeo Camp. After arriving at Marrakech airport you drive about 45 minutes into the Agafay's Stone Desert until a white tent camp appears out of nowhere. A film set: so chic and timeless that you expect to see a young Ingrid Bergman dressed in white at any moment. Serene Scandinavian class in the mix with the traditional Morocco of the traveling Berbers and the ancient Africa of David Livingstone. Neutral colors and Beni Ouarain rugs, Moroccan accessories and vintage finds such as atlases, globes, binoculars and travel-sized board games. Book with us and settle down in one of the many comfortable seating areas, with the tent canvas flapping in the background. Until it's time to make your way through a candlelit path to the fairytale restaurant tent.

You can stay at the Stone Desert Camp of Camp Scarabeo from mid-September to mid-June, after which it becomes too hot.

Desert Camp Morocco

Desert Camp Morocco

Not to be confused with the first mentioned in this article, although the tent camps are somewhat similar, and not just in name. Desert Camp Morocco is also a dreamy all-inclusive luxury desert camp, run by the lovely Nick and Bobo. You will find the camp (also) deep in the Moroccan Sahara, remote and off the beaten track. The two run their camp with passes and have a preference for an active outdoor life: anyone who thinks that a few days in the desert is boring is absolutely wrong. You find the camp in the Very Chigaga dunes. All tents are small, but the men have one amazing tent specifically for honeymooners. It goes without saying that you have to have it, honeymoon or not.
