Design District, Helsinki
A bit by accident, a bit on purpose - during a few hours of 'free' time on a business trip - we ended up in the great design district of Helsinki. The center of the Finnish capital is already bursting with wonderful, well-organized strolling streets, but the more than 200 (!) shops that sell fashion, design, vintage furniture and jewelry are a treat for even the most seasoned shopper.
Some highlights:
- One of the most authentic Scandinavian things Kauniste, a company that asks new designers every year to create prints for its printed textiles, cups and iPhone cases. An abundance of pastel colours, pine trees and sobriety is the pleasant result. Nice for an original souvenir.
- In papery land Paper Shop you simply want to buy everything: their retro notebooks, greeting cards and posters fit into the nursery as well as outside.
- Bee Pine Scandinavian design is truly expressed in all its qualities: you will find home accessories, stationery, bathroom supplies, streamers for children's parties and trendy reading glasses. Pino's designs are sleek, with natural materials and subdued colors. A textbook example of functional and cool Scandinavian hipness.
- And as for the little ones, for example Punavuoren Peikko Highly recommended: not only the Swedish top brand Mini Rodini is well represented (also in the outlet!), but also other European super brands such as Little Man Happy and Bobo Choses.
- Finally, the children's paradise Zicco is also recommended, where, in addition to creative and colorful toys, they also sell clothes from the Danish brand, among others. Phister & Philina.
Of course, there are plenty of wonderful catering establishments around all this, with - as befits the Far North - a wide range of organic and artisanal food and drinks. There's no doubt about it: next time we'll stay a few days longer! Design District
