Dimora delle Balze is situated inland in the southeast of Sicily. From Catania Airport, drive towards Syracuse, the famous UNESCO World Heritage city on the coast, and turn inland after about an hour. A gravel path with neatly trimmed vegetation leads to the house: the wooden entrance gate dates from the early days of the estate. A family from Northern Italy purchased the property in 2009 and gradually renovated it into an understated residence.

Surrounding the house is grounds that have been left partly untouched, with remnants of columns and a view of the property's own farm, Passo Ladro, an area of ​​27 hectares. Amidst carob and lemon trees and on natural stone floors, you naturally find peace… Noto and Syracuse can wait. In one of the courtyards lies a lounge featuring work by artists such as Valentine Herrenschmidt, Katrine Arens, and Paola Navone. The furniture was made by local artisans.

There are eleven rooms and suites, spread across the various courtyards and all decorated differently. The historic architecture and the abundance of antiques create an atmospheric ambiance; furthermore, they are equipped with comfortable beds and bathrooms, a coffee machine, television, and even beach bags. The tower room, named Clandestini, overlooks the estate.

There is a small spa with a view of the landscape, offering treatments and massages. The pavilion is modest in size but has a large glass facade overlooking the surroundings.

The organic restaurant Lumia is situated by the pool, in the somewhat more modern part of the estate, and is completely open at the front. Both a light lunch and dinner are served, following the principles of slow food. Many ingredients come from the estate's own farm, Passo Ladro, located slightly lower down on the grounds. There is, among other things, a five-course surprise menu featuring dishes centered around Bronte pistachios, for example.

Dimora delle Balze is a good base. Most guests head to Noto and Syracuse during the day. The latter, a city on the water, was founded by Greek colonists before the Common Era. The historic towns of Modica and Ragusa are also about an hour's drive away.
