Talk of the town (uh: the country): Garage Modern, Leeuwarden's newest Italian restaurant
Since July 31, a new Italian player has been deployed at the Zaailand in Leeuwarden: Garage Modern. The restaurant concept is the brainchild of Florian Missaglia (known for Café de Nachtwacht in Doelesteeg in the same city) and 3WO Horeca Groep (yes, the one from Amsterdam) and has been a hit from day one. How? Simple: truly good, no-nonsense Italian food, truly cozy, and in a truly cool (industrial) location. Ta-da! A hit.
Garage Modern—what's in a name?—is housed in a former garage, and it's evident everywhere: steel staircases, concrete bar, open kitchen with a wood-fired oven… And one glance at the menu also tells you what you're in for: classic Italian with a Garage Modern twist: bresaola carpaccio, tuna crudo with pistachio, and a striking vodka-'nduja lasagna. Pizzas start at €15, which we consider a very reasonable price. For drinks, you can try arancini with basil aioli or spicy sardines on sourdough toast—sounds promising.
And furthermore, at Garage Modern we talk about a all-day cConcept – we love it. From coffee to dinner, and on market days you can grab an espresso for just €1. The terrace on Zaailand is lovely, and on less-popular days, there's also a covered indoor terrace.
It will certainly not be boring at Garage Modern: the programming is ambitious, to say the least: drag queen-pub quiz on tuesday, Thirsty Thursday, Friday evening is for (live,) music and on Saturdays Club Moderna takes over the hut.
