Bart Brandt with the tastiest soy candles (scented candles) from Brandt
We had our eye on them for a while, the scented candles from the Dutch label Brandt. Burns with dt. Throw in our love for alliteration and scented candles, preferably soy candles, on top and you soon get Bart Brandt. We can feel it... Stay tuned, who knows, maybe it will happen ;-)
First back to Brandt: Brandt is the brainchild of Giselle from Brabant (with a penchant for long bike rides through nature, that's a aside). Her story (note, it's a good one): Giselle was working as a safety expert (yes) when she received a handmade candle as a gift from a friend from the States in 2015. A beautiful and personal gift, craft and natural. So special that she said goodbye to the security industry, booked a one-way ticket to New York and apprenticed with that candle-making friend in Sunset Park, New York City.
The rest is – sort of – history: Giselle came back, a dose of inspiration and craft in her proverbial backpack (she normally goes cycling with the real backpack. As we speak is she doing that too, we know, in Ireland, completely unimportant).
With everything she had learned in New York, the goal became to create her own scented candle line soy candles to put down. One that would be accessible in terms of design but beautiful, and would also smell nice.
But not only that: sustainability also became an important pillar. Oh, and then everything had to smell nice (spoiler alert: everything worked out, everything we fleek). The hand-poured Brandt candles are now a smart and accessible alternative to the well-known scented candle with paraffin and stearin. The candles come in an attractive glass jar and, perhaps most importantly, have the most delicious scents.
Our house favorite, burning daily in our HQ, Bar Bart? The honeysuckle. A refined, light scent that, surprise, you rarely smell elsewhere. It is slightly spicy (we like it) but never too present (because: ew).
Although the new wood collection also smells divinely delicious. The line contains 0% plastic and comes in a beautiful organic cotton, ethically produced bag.
Let's talk about vegan… How exactly does that work? The candles are hand-poured from soy wax, a premium wax made from the oil of soy beans. The beans are grown, cleaned, crushed, peeled and rolled into flakes, all in an agriculturally sustainable way. The remains of this process are used as feed for animals. The wicks used are lead and zinc free and made of natural cotton threads interwoven with paper threads. And we also think this is great: there is also a 'refill collection', available in all scents. These tea lights have no casing and have been developed in a size that fits in any Brandt glass. And: those glasses are really nice and also a great vase for a small plant. Just saying.
