Hotel Fanø Krogaard on Fanø, Denmark

Twelve minutes by ferry from Esbjerg, and you walk right into a pub from 1664. Hotel Fanø Krogaard In Nordby, on the Danish Wadden Island of Fanø, is one of the oldest inns in Denmark, and a beautifully restored one at that. We haven't been there ourselves yet, but the photos did the talking and the guest reviews speak for themselves. So, this one is going on our list.

About Fanø Krogaard

About Fanø Krogaard

Fanø Krogaard belongs to sisters Mette and Mie Hyttel. Mette Hyttel grew up in Esbjerg, across the water, in her parents' hotel. Afterwards, she worked as a buyer, including at the Magasin department store in Copenhagen. When her family bought the inn, she restored it, and now she runs it as a hostess. People have been coming here to eat and sleep since 1664, and you can see that immediately: the house has the same picture-book facade as the old houses on the island. Inside, there are antique items, family heirlooms, and regional finds; there is a small library, and the fireplace is burning at the reception. Mette wants you to feel as if you are staying with friends. However, few friends live in such a beautiful place.

Fanø Krogaard has 25 rooms, spread across the main house and a few surrounding houses. If you're going for the view, choose the main house from 1664. Upstairs, you look out over the Wadden Sea through large windows, and with a bit of luck, you might spot seals on the sandbanks. In Skomagerens Hus, the shoemaker's house, there is patterned wallpaper and the beds are larger. Some of the rooms have a private terrace and a bath. A fair note: the rooms differ significantly from one another. At the back are the former maid's rooms, with a bed, a wardrobe, and a private bathroom, and nothing else. Fine for a night, but if you want that sea view, check carefully what you book.

Chef Kasper Elmholdt Pedersen learned his trade at Henne Kirkeby Kro, cooked at Geist in Copenhagen, and helped set up restaurants in Shanghai. At Fanø Krogaard, he keeps it classically Danish: local and organic products, a menu that changes with the seasons, and dishes meant to be shared. Mette herself puts it very matter-of-factly: it doesn't have to be anything other than simply good quality. You dine in one of the three dining rooms or in the glass orangery, which still features a fireplace and overlooks the sea. Breakfast is ordered à la carte, featuring smoked salmon, bread, cheese, and Danish pastries, among other things. And the coffee is organic, of course.
