An accommodation in Stellenbosch that we would love to return to: San Gabriel Homestead. And again. And again. Anyway, it's actually our favorite on this list. Especially with kids, because it's so child-friendly here, without being too obvious, just the way we like it. The centuries-old farmhouse is enormous: you can reserve the classic main house, the Manor House, which has no fewer than four bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms, as well as a fantastic kitchen (with a classic farmhouse kitchen island and pans hanging everywhere), an enormous living room (and separate study) and a private pool, jacuzzi, and barbecue where you can pitch a tent. Breakfast is a highlight: the owner gets up at 5 a.m. to bake bread, and all the bread, pastries, and fresh fruit (so much fruit) are served on a communal table where all the guests gather.

Can't make it to the main house? No problem: the grounds feature several smaller cottages with a shared large swimming pool, and they're also more than suitable for one or two children. The garden is a dream, with animals roaming around everywhere (donkeys, horses, chickens, dogs, peacocks – it's a real animal paradise), and of course, there's plenty of climbing equipment for the little ones.

On Friday evenings, the owners (who are also parents of young children, so you'll find toys for the little ones everywhere) organize pizza nights at sunset.

San Gabriel

In the heart of the charming Stellenbosch, one of the oldest towns in all of South Africa, is the atmospheric Old Werf HotelThe hotel has been around for three centuries, making it the oldest hotel in South Africa, although you wouldn't know it: this boutique hotel is both authentically charming and modern and contemporary. The rooms surrounding the spacious patio (with a swimming pool, of course) are largely made of glass; beautiful. Don't worry: there are curtains. And although the hotel is super centrally located in charming Stellenbosch (some rooms overlook Church Street), dinner in the hotel restaurant has been a so-called treat for two centuries. black.

Almost opposite Spek & Bone is Twice Central, a contemporary boutique hotel. There are only seven rooms with grayish-blue walls against green velvet armchairs, colorful heavy Egyptian cotton bed linens, copper lamps—it could all have been in New York. But that courtyard with its swimming pool, the complimentary bicycles in your room, and the pleasant bustle almost as soon as you step out the door… That's something only South Africa can offer.

We hear it more and more often: a dream trip with the whole family. Grandpa and Grandma taking kids and grandkids on that one dream trip to South Africa. A Very Good Idea! And if you're lucky (good for you!), you'll naturally want to stay somewhere where everyone has their own space. The aforementioned San Gabriel is a good idea, but if you really want 100% privacy, then The Neighbors Farm Homestead in Stellenbosch also top! Assuming we haven't been here ourselves yet (because we usually go with kids or with more when in the area), but this stunning private cabin for two is high on the wishlist: Stellenbosch Farm CabinA spartan-looking but very comfortable cottage for two in a fantastic location. When you Blaauwklippen Wine Estate, near Stellenbosch city, compares with Boschendal, then we wouldn't find that surprising at all. Although there are quite a few differences, you can visit both white farmhouses on the enormous estate surrounding them for various enjoyable activities, such as – in the case of Blaauwklippen – the Family Market on Saturdays and Sundays. A local institution, thanks to its seasonal focus and emphasis on local, organic, and sustainable food, products, and goods, live music, and games for all ages. It's a great place to do your grocery shopping, even if you're not staying in a hotel but in one of the charming restaurants. self-service Cape Town boasts a wealth of cottages. But if you can, definitely spend a night here: the main house, Blaauwklippen Manor, has that perfect classic British charm, and everything about it is delicious.

Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen Wine Estate is one of the oldest wine estates in Stellenbosch. It's an unpretentious place with a rich history and winemaking tradition.
