We have known for a long time that we are not the only ones who love spending the summer months on the South French coast. Because the Côte d'Azur is and remains incredibly beautiful, but also because it allows us to avoid flying and turn it into a pleasant road trip through ever-beautiful France. But where, oh where, do we make that pit stop? We often aim for the area around Dijon – after all, that is nicely centered. And it just so happens that we tested this gem right there, a lucky find on Booking.com: Les Sources de Vougeot, Burgundy, France.

In Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, a village of some six hundred inhabitants between Dijon and Beaune, stands the Château de Gilly: once a priory, later the residence of the abbots of Cîteaux, with a moat, church, ribbed vaults, French gardens, and an old mill on the Vouge. The property had long operated as a hotel but reopened in March 2026 following a renovation. And the result is fantastic! That old-fashioned, quaint French coziness, but oh so modern. Responsible for this are Alice and Jérôme Tourbier, who started Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux in 1999 and opened Les Sources de Cheverny in the Loire in 2020. Vougeot is the couple's third hotel.

There are 49 rooms; old tiles and paneling have been restored, and locally sourced antiques are on display. Some of the furniture and wall coverings from the previous interior have been preserved and reused. The spa is located in the vaulted wine cellar, where the restaurant used to be, and that alone is a reason to book: it is picture-perfect. Between the stone columns lie two pools: one for swimming laps, one with massage jets. Yes! Another reason: all treatments are by Caudalie, one of our favorite wellness brands, where everything is based on grape seed extract.

The hotel is located on the Route des Grands Crus, which is home to 32 Grands Crus vineyards in the Côte d'Or, and bicycles are available for rent. The Château du Clos de Vougeot is a four-minute drive away, and Vougeot–Gilly-lès-Cîteaux station is a thirteen-minute walk. Dijon is a half-hour drive away, and Lyon airport is two hours away. Furthermore, there is a tennis court and an outdoor swimming pool. It sounds like a lot to do, and indeed there is. This makes it a wonderful place to stay with the whole family: children of all ages are welcome, suites have sofa beds, there are connecting rooms, extra beds (€50 per night), cots (€20), and babysitting services starting from €40 per hour. Dogs are allowed in all room types for €30 per night, but not in the spa, the swimming pool, or Le Clos de la Tour.
