Meet Marres: a house for contemporary culture in Maastricht. There isn't much to see from the street, but appearances can be deceiving! In the former home of the beer-brewing Marres Family you will find a Mediterranean restaurant and a hidden exhibition space. If you are in the area, a visit to Marres is definitely worthwhile. Even if it's just to take a stroll through the public garden (the largest in Maastricht!), they still have that.

At Marres they want to show that art goes beyond works hanging on the wall. The exhibitions are therefore very focused on the senses and the relationship between your body and the art. No information signs on the wall here, but first look and later (or not at all) look up in your book what the artist actually meant. Marres is also fun with children, because they are very nice in touch with their senses. There is no permanent collection and the exhibition changes four times a year. You can go in any direction with the house, so it will transform into a large plant kingdom next summer (2023). House and garden are then even more connected. Workshops are regularly organized in that garden and you can also sit on the terrace in the summer.
Be sure to visit Marres Kitchen before (or after) your museum visit! The first chef came from Damascus and later cooked in a restaurant in Sicily. When he came to Maastricht, he took all the impressions he had gained there with him to Marres, where the menu is still well filled with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. Although various meat/fish dishes are served, there is also a lot of choice for vegetarians.
