Dutch food at restaurant 't Heemelrijck in Amsterdam
We love a good dinner. And what we mean by that is good company, atmosphere in the business, great service and of course a table full of goodies. All the boxes checked? Then you're in the right place anyway. So we take you to the bustling Van Woustraat in Amsterdam, where you can find a range of good catering establishments and where you will certainly find a place that meets all your requirements. Hop, there you have it Restaurant 't Heemelrijck. An asset to De Pijp, where you can enjoy real Dutch food. And don't be put off if you don't necessarily like Dutch cuisine (hutspot, really..), because even the skeptics are in the right place here (we can say this from our own experience).
When you enter, it's immediately a party: walls of brown wooden planks, high ceilings, plates with Delft blue as decoration on the wall and tables with carpets on them, just like at grandma's house and just the way it is. All this creates a warm, cozy entrance without it becoming old-fashioned. And the crazy thing is, it feels like it's been like this for years. This may perhaps be because the interior is completely vintage/second-hand (hat), so the first box can already be checked, because the interior certainly makes us happy. And the history of the business also makes it fun: in 1949, 'grandfather Nars' started a traditional sandwich shop. Due to great success, the sandwich shop eventually became a restaurant, where they served typical Dutch dishes (such as chowder, stewed meat and stew). The baton was handed over in 2010 after 44 years of success. But that was not the end: ultimately in collaboration with the second and third generations, Café Restaurant The Heavenly Kingdom reopened on Van Woustraat, where Dutch glory still comes first.
Then next: the menu, for the vegetarians among us this restaurant may not be such a good idea, but for the meat and fish eaters. If there are several of you, it is also a good idea to share. While the bottle of wine was placed on the table, we took a closer look at the menu. Two dishes were shared: the sole with vegetables and the simmered meat with mashed potatoes, vegetables and fries. They often also have a catch of the day on the menu, which you should check with the waiter. For those who are more skeptical about the cuisine from our little country: it was delicious, really. The service is also great by the way, because put two doubters together and you'll be busy for a while... So be sure to ask for advice!
Safe the best for last they say, right? On the recommendation of the staff, we ordered French toast with cinnamon ice cream. As far as we're concerned, they can always keep this on the menu, it was so delicious, it was like an angel peeing on your tongue. Highly recommended (we'll just pass it on). Incidentally, the boxes for good staff, good food and pleasant company could all be ticked. You have our blessing.
