The best (remote) restaurants in the Northern Netherlands (provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe)

At Barts Boekje we naturally recommend the best restaurants. And we often do this in the cities: easy to organize, easily accessible and most of them can be found there more often. But the Dutch catering industry proves more than once that there is life outside the big cities. Take the Far North for example (by which we mean Groningen, Friesland en Drenthe), you will find really good restaurants there. You often have to drive a bit to get there and sometimes they are somewhat remote, but it is well worth it. Nice for a road trip, for example, or for those who like a bit of discovery. These are the best remote restaurants in the Northern Netherlands.

Near Hammingh (Groningen)

Near Hammingh (Groningen)

Oooh is it summer already? Then we can catch up At Hammingh hanging in the garden. And oh, is it winter already? Then we can dine for hours in Garnwerd. Garnwerd is a mound village (you know: an artificial hill designed to provide a dry place at high tide) on the Reitdiep in the province of Groningen. And in that mound village, you will find a lovely spot there. A spot where Groningen down-to-earthness comes first and the name is restaurant Bij Hammingh.

Beautifully located on the water and a beautiful original interior in the building that has a lot of history. In summer we recommend that you find a spot in the Orchard.

Backhuys in Winschoten (Groningen)

Backhuys in Winschoten (Groningen)

Do you really want to get to know (east) Groningen? Then join us at Backhuys in Winschoten. Backhuys is located in a former bakery and transformed into a small but nice restaurant, where you immediately feel at home. Not least because of the friendly staff. By means of slow cooking, where fresh (and honest!) regional products are of paramount importance and excellent advice on suitable wines, you can taste the best of Groningen.

Oh and you immediately learn a good word of Groningen, because the dishes have beautiful names such as: “Loagjestoarte van knoln”, “Dik doet in 't Backhoes” and “Oet mien toentje”.

Op up in the air Backhuys!

The Basilica (Groningen)

The Basilica (Groningen)

An evening of delicious dining at a special and attractive location? De Basiliek Appingedam is your place. The Basilica is located in the St. Nicholas Church of Appingedam. The church has been beautifully renovated while retaining the authentic details (incredibly beautiful stained glass windows all around you). The Basilica has an extensive menu, something for everyone.

If you are adventurous, you can also be surprised by the chef with a 3-, 4- or 5-course dinner and a matching wine arrangement.

The Basilica is just one of those places where everything fits together: the atmosphere, the interior, the menu, the staff... A big tip.

FLONK PAVILION, OLDAMBTMEER, FINSTERWOLDE

FLONK PAVILION, OLDAMBTMEER, FINSTERWOLDE

To be fair, here in Groningen they are generally quite down-to-earth and even a bit skeptical. Even when a new restaurant opens. The “see-the-believe” idea applied here. The opposite has now been proven and this is really one that makes us enthusiastic: Pavilion Flonk. Located in Finsterwolde on the Oldambtmeer, about 30 km from the city of Groningen, Flonk provides the ultimate holiday feeling. And that's what you want. And good food of course. You want that too. And a good drink. And if possible, also nice and attentive staff. Check! Lunch? Drinks? Dinner? We haven't yet decided what we prefer to do there, but it is a fact that we enjoy coming there. Speaking of this last fact, you can even go there by boat: there are plenty of moorings. For when you are really in holiday mode.

Hello Friesland! Or rather: Súdwest Fryslân, because Hey Frits was on a road trip past some of the nicest villages in this region. Remember them for a day trip or if you are in this area for a weekend, and read more about the villages in Southwest Friesland.

Lauswolt estate (Friesland)

Lauswolt estate (Friesland)

Those who love Downton Abbey also love it Lauswolt estate (and anyone who doesn't like Downton Abbey will still love the amazing estate). The enormous white country house on the wooded estate in the Frisian Beetsterzwaag is chic and chic. The entrance alone; via a red carpet you climb a staircase to the glass front doors of the enormous marble hall of the 5-star hotel.

You can eat on the ground floor, in the 1-star restaurant De Heeren van Harinxma. Or – a little simpler, at Bistro Nijeholt. The restaurants have their own vegetable garden on the estate.

LOG CABIN & PLAY FOREST FIREBIRD (Friesland)

LOG CABIN & PLAY FOREST FIREBIRD (Friesland)

Located in at least one of those great locations Sparjebird. Hidden in the woods between Drachten and Heerenveen and Leeuwarden, you can relax and drink coffee or have a drink while the children play and roast marshmallows over the campfire. It doesn't get any cozier. That nice atmosphere is enhanced by the retro looks of the Log Cabin. In the summer you can grab a spot on the sunny terrace and when it is cooler, you can warm up by the wood-burning stove. De Blokhut has a bag with assignments for the kids, which they can do during a treasure hunt through the forest. The real little ones will also have endless fun: splashing around with water at the water pump, climbing in the climbing tree or discovering the gnome forest together. This is enjoyment in the Frisian Wouden.

PICNICERS, TERHERNE (Friesland)

PICNICERS, TERHERNE (Friesland)

We received this tip from several sources and consistently for the same reason: great tent in a great location. Restaurant – or food bar, as they call it – picnickers is located right on the Sneekermeer and has a lovely terrace with a view over the Frisian lakes. The menu includes classics such as pasta carbonara and croquettes, but also Indian yellow curry and a vegetarian kapsalon. Plus a very nice drinks menu, we like. If you are sleeping somewhere nearby and the little ones need to go to bed, you can also pick up something from Picnickers.

Still nearby? Grab a snack and a juice on the sunny terrace of Buur in Sneek. Or go the other way and treat your child to an ice cream and a trampoline at Ice Farm Boereiis in Akkrum.

BRASSERIE OM DE DOBBEN, BURGUM

BRASSERIE OM DE DOBBEN, BURGUM

Another wonderful place in the green and exactly what you are looking for when you are out with the mini(s): About the dice. On the terrace you get a good coffee and a large piece of cake in front of you. There is a really nice shielded playing field with wooden play equipment and goats roam around for your child to pet. There are lamb days in the spring, so keep an eye on the Facebook page of Om de dobben.

Beautiful River Dalfsen (Overijssel)

Beautiful River Dalfsen (Overijssel)

Upon entering it is immediately noticeable: here it is Rust with a capital letter. A very timeless and homely style and then those high windows that let in the beautiful light. But Mooi River has also thought about the flex workers in the area: on the edge, tables are cleverly arranged as workplaces with a view of the Vecht. If you stay the night, a huge breakfast buffet awaits you the next day with a variety of toppings, different types of bread (of course also the gluten-free varieties), different types of yogurt (even coconut), eggs, sweet rolls and various drinks. Like. You can also nod to the chefs who work in a large open kitchen. And not only the accommodation and breakfast get a big thumbs up, that also goes to the Mooirivier staff. A big thumbs up. The staff here is genuinely sweet, warm, cordial, hospitable, professional and oh so friendly.

DE LOOHOEVE, SCHOONLOO (Drenthe)

DE LOOHOEVE, SCHOONLOO (Drenthe)

About a 20-minute drive from Assen and you are at the best restaurant in the area. Like this. De Loohoeve is a bit in the proverbialmiddle of nowhereYes, but that shouldn't spoil the fun. In fact, that just makes the fun even greater. The restaurant is run by a young duo, he in the kitchen, she in the service and everything runs smoothly. It is beautiful outside, like everything in Drenthe. You enter in one kind of brown pub, the restaurant lies parallel to this, a – let's be honest – somewhat overly Christian, stiff hall. But hey! This is about the food and that is to pass through a ring trimmed with gold glitter. Just like the service. And the wines.
