Secret Garden restaurant with Nikkei Cuisine in the heart of Amsterdam

Get those heels, your suit and your nice bag out of the closet - because eating out is... Secret Garden is one big party. All out it is! Where this 'secret garden' is located is in the heart of Amsterdam on the Reguliersdwarsstaat. You would walk right past it, because the door is completely covered in plants. Okay okay, lives up to the name. What awaits you this evening? An exotic and sexy atmosphere, Peruvian cocktails, DJs, and good (really good!) food based on the Nikkei Cuisine. Uhh sorry what? This is a mix of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. The delicate and elegant flavors of Japan are mixed with the wonderfully fresh, sometimes spicy flavors of Peru.

Would you like to go for a dance after dinner? Anyway, you immediately move on to more cocktails at Reguliersdwarsstraat, or you can also sing a round of karaoke at Duke of Tokyo.

From sfeer

From sfeer

Your mouth drops open upon entering. It feels a bit like you are entering another world, where you are surrounded by lots of dark green and blue tones. The walls are strewn with flowers and plants for that extra touch over the exotic wallpaper. If you walk a bit past the bar, you will come face to face with a large peacock in a golden cage. You don't want to let them escape into that secret garden. And the ceiling, you want to look at it all evening. Your table companion may not actually be offended if you wander off every now and then. Because yes, that's going to happen, you want to look around you all the time.

The restaurant

The restaurant

The restaurant is divided into different parts. You start with it sip of a cocktail in the Green Room. Fine dining you do this at the back, in the Garden Restaurant. Or you can take a seat in the Bar & Lounge, where the DJ plays records all evening. In the lounge you sit on large suede chairs and sofas that you won't want to leave all evening. But eating at the bar is also a treat here. Do you have to go to the toilet and you don't really feel like it because your food is about to arrive (guilty), then go anyway. Because it is literally a party to walk to the toilet.

The cocktails

The cocktails

You can't make a wrong choice here. You can choose from the signature cocktails, Peruvian cocktails, Gin Tonics (Secret Garden style - think hints of Yuzu and Blossom) and mocktails. Or you choose 'Faith', a surprise from the bartender. Recommendations? The Tokyo Mule made from Sake, Elderflower, lime, honey, ginger beer, lemongrass & shiso. Also thoroughly approved is the Chicha Sour with La Diablada Pisco, Chica Morada, lime and egg white for that delicious foam layer. Did you choose the late shift? Then you can end your evening here and just try them all while the music gets a little louder. Feet off the floor…

The food

The food

Okay, then last but definitely not least – the food. Which dishes can you really not miss? Let’s be honest, this is going to be a difficult choice. You would prefer to order everything from the menu. Especially the dishes with the crazy names, you want those. Good to know, the idea is that you share everything. Order it all at once and the service will make sure that the dishes are put on the table calmly one after the other so that you can enjoy a long meal. The table is yours for 2 hours and XNUMX minutes. Then the kitchen – this tells the story of Nikkei Cuisine. In the morning all the fresh fish arrives and is then filleted and prepared all day long. Each dish is prepared in a different way than you are used to. Everything garnished with cheerful colours. A real party on your plate. But especially in your mouth.

The recommendations

The recommendations

Okay, so those recommendations. One hundred and ten percent sure you start with the edamame beans, which are grilled (instead of steamed) which gives them a smoky taste. Then you order the tostada with guacamole, which is freshly prepared at your table. Then the tuna tamago, a kind of sushi but in a bowl with quail egg and caviar. Tip: eat this from bottom to top so that you have everything on the spoon. Otherwise you will end up with the egg raw in your mouth. You also want the scallop a la plancha (grilled) with tomato balls, served on a large shell. As if it came straight from the sea to your plate.

Then continue with Pani Puri. These are hollow balls filled with steak or tuna tartare. Pani Puri literally means 'water in fried bread'. But how do you think all that good stuff gets into that ball? This is a real art. Every day they make small holes in the balls (without breaking them) after which they fill them with all the goodies. And to think that this is the most ordered dish, so spray thoroughly. It is also very tasty torched (roasted) scallop ceviche. And what might not be your first choice is the Skiing (roasted) corn salad, so simple but so delicious. As a main course (but still for sharing) you want the crunchy pulpo and the sea bass cooked in miso. Again: does not disappoint. End your dinner with the pineapple crème brûlée. Hint: it involves a whole pineapple.

Secret Secret

Secret Secret

Be there on time to get a table, because understandably – the tables are very popular. But! A bird in the garden whispered to us that there will be a real expansion. Yesss!! More places. What will this expansion look like? A sliding roof so that you can dine covered 'outside' in the winter and in the open air in the summer. As if you are really abroad. Here too you can enjoy fine dining, just like the Garden Restaurant. If you open the doors here, this becomes one big restaurant. Let's go so. And besides getting to know a new cuisine after your visit, you can add new words to your culinary vocabulary.
