Sharing is caring: this is why we are fans of car sharing

On Barts Boekje we share a lot of tips. Also tips that we secretly would rather keep to ourselves. But you know what they say; sharing is caring. This is not only true for tips, but also for cars. Today you get both. If you want that, because thanks to car sharing you are within a few clicks en route. Car sharing? A shared car? Yup: that’s what it sounds like, a car that you share with others, and you only pay when you use the car.

Ideal for those who, say, don't need a car more than a few times a month or even less. Or sometimes every week, and then again for months. For that one trip to IKEA, or to take the kids to a football match far away. Or, the best option in our opinion: to cozy cabin or pop-up restaurant in the green! Outside the city, where public transport does not or hardly comes. And no, that is not a hassle, such a shared car... A travel hack, that's it. Just read:

Although parallel parking – we can't solve that for you – will always be an issue, you will benefit in many ways with a shared car: driving a shared car (often, not always, but in many situations) is much cheaper than having your own car (all costs taken into account), more sustainable in use (because there are fewer cars in the Netherlands, and you only use it when you really need it), and offers convenience and flexibility. You don't even have to worry about insurance costs, depreciation and maintenance costs and parking permits, but only pay when you actually take the car. That one box you saw on Marktplaats, and that absolutely has to be picked up, is suddenly an option. And now you can actually put 'you will be brought home' on the invitations for your kids' birthday party. And we thought the shared car was the hero of the day when we spontaneously decided to have a party and we got all the groceries home without back and saddle pain...

Also useful to know is that the rates for car sharing often include consumption (petrol or electric), maintenance and insurance. There is a fuel card in every petrol car and the electric version works with a charging key. Many car sharing companies offer electric cars. That is ideal, and not only for anyone who is curious about electric driving (spoiler: it is very nice!), but the apps of most providers also show how full the car is: so you know in advance exactly how far you can go with the battery. Oh and about the aforementioned parking stress: with many car sharing companies you get your own assigned parking space. Handy!

The past few years have shown that car sharing is not such a crazy idea. In 2024, there are many different providers on the market, but they all work more or less the same: you download an app, you register and then the app recognizes you every time you book a car. Thanks to GPS, the app knows where the nearest shared car is, so you can easily reserve the car of your choice. You can open the car with the app, and the app guides you effortlessly through the process (where is the key? does the car need to be charged? how do you close it? how do you end the booking? and if it still doesn't work, there is always an 'emergency call' number so you get a real person on the line who can tell you what to do).

Also the handy tool on startmetdelen.nl shows where and at what price shared cars are available. On the website you can also read all about practical matters such as reserving, picking up and loading or refueling shared cars.

Imagine...

Imagine...

So why would you share a car? Because it is so convenient when you really need a car. For example, if you do not own a car yourself, or your partner's is always in use. Or when your car has to go to the garage. Or maybe you have a small car, and you need a larger one every now and then for stuff, or a trip with friends. Then a car sharing subscription offers a solution. And then imagine that in a while the roads are a lot quieter. Less traffic jams, more space on the street, more space for greenery and there is less CO2 emission. Sounds good, right? By sharing more and more cars, we need to own fewer. Yet many people still see bears instead of shared cars on the road, while such a shared car has more advantages than disadvantages. By using a shared car, you never have to worry about maintenance and the additional costs, car insurance, road tax and that eternal parkingstruggles (parking permits, no space, every city dweller knows). And by share you ensure 175-265 (!) kg less CO2 emissions per year. Sharing is truly caring due.
