Surf spot Taghazout, Morocco

When you think of Morocco, you probably think mainly of Marrakesh. That's absolutely fine, but there's more to it than that. taghazout for example. A fishing village on the west coast that is also known as the surfing mecca of Morocco, but still relatively undiscovered. In addition to surfers, the village also attracts many yogis - you immerse yourself in a relaxed atmosphere. You owe this all to the hippies who discovered the village in the 60s and 70s. Since then, the sleepy village has become a hotspot for water rats armed with wooden planks. That's not surprising, especially if you look at the conditions, because they are optimal all year round: both the temperature and the waves. So it's a shame not to put this on your list!

Shortly after sunrise, surfers check the weather and waves to decide whether it will be a good surfing day. The fishermen play card games on the quay after their daily catch. Here they completely understand the concept of slow living. Kudos. An obvious idea, but it must be said: try a surfing lesson and see if it is something for you. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

However, you don't have to be a surfer to have a good time here, watching is just as much fun, and at least more relaxing. Plenty of beaches and terraces. Speaking of terraces: in Taghazout you will find several rooftop bars, from where you have a beautiful view of the sun setting into the sea…

Not far from Taghazout you will find Kaouki Hill Hideaways, in Dour, Iskoua, Morocco. A wonderful, beautiful and cozy AirBnB address where you can book your own wooden house or yurt.

The village itself is bursting with surf hostels and yoga retreats, but fear not: you don't have to share a room with eight people and just as many surfboards. After all, so many people have so many wishes, and so there are also places for those who have less hippie blood running through their veins. It once made us happy Munga Guesthouse, a boutique hotel with 15 rooms and wood everywhere, a stone's throw from the beach and several cafes and restaurants. However, it is Munga Not quite what it used to be: not clean, not pleasant. We hope that there will be a re-vamp to restore the hotel to its former loving glory, but for now we'll check in somewhere else (updated April 2023).
