Restaurant Tannay: French roots with Amsterdam charm (Amsterdam)
Tannay (Amsterdam), on the edge of Prinseneiland, is well worth the detour. Do the photos remind you of the Caron family's Golden Reael? Then your restaurant knowledge is in good hands. The restaurant, housed in the iconic corner building, has been upgraded and has been called Tannay since 2024.
With chef Thomas Demuth at the helm, and under the umbrella of the Carons, the best of both French worlds are brought to the table. Thomas pays tribute to his roots - Burgundy and the picturesque French village of Tannay. Aha! And he cooks as only a French chef can: rich, warm, and a touch mischievous.
Upon entering, the building's charm immediately takes hold: old beams, ornamentation, and white walls. The interior exudes a warm, rustic atmosphere, and the open kitchen adds just the right amount of vibrancy.
The reason we were here: the chef's menu. We started with a pot au feu, followed by a egg mollet (expensive for a soft-boiled egg) with chanterelle and black truffle (favorite). Then: pointed cabbage from the BBQ with radicchio and Nantes butter (favorite), tagliolini with langoustine and stracciatella (stirring is mandatory, says the chef) and wild duck with ceps and figs (most favorite).
Time to give up the top button. Dessert: a crazy delicious tarte tatin, à la Demuth, followed by a warm, oven-baked brioche with homemade Nutella and coffee. Second button undone. This brioche? Inspired by Thomas's mother, who, so the story goes, baked it for him every day after school. We don't believe a word of it, far too romantic, but we'll happily swallow it whole.
Other plus points about Tannay: it's bustling in the evenings, much quieter during lunch – something for everyone. The terrace? One of Amsterdam's best: on the water, sunny from early morning until late, and overlooking a picturesque little bridge. Bonus: Father Demuth is also a must-see; his wine is featured on the menu, and where else but from Tannay?
Fun fact To conclude, in the 80s, the patriarch of the Caron family, Alain, moved to Amsterdam for love and started his first job in the kitchen here. We really like it!
