The best tips FOR A GOOD night's sleep (also / especially DURING THE CORONA PANDEMIC)

Bart Stays Inside these days and let's be honest: we (also) spend a lot of that time indoors in bed. Wonderful for some and a bit stressful for others. Because how do you get those racing thoughts out of your head? Quite difficult, while sleep is super important for good health. We started talking to a sleep coach (also because our own little one doesn't want to sleep and it turned out to be good for everyone to delve into the how and what of sleeping). Sleep is essential to stay healthy (or become healthy again), did you know that? Sleep gives your body the opportunity to carry out repair work, which also includes processing the day and reducing stress. Just what the doctor ordered.

One of the first things we learned is that what goes on in your head determines how you sleep (to a large extent). Emotions, including the fear of not being able to sleep, tension and stress ensure that you lie awake, while your body is tired. Interesting: how long you sleep exactly (most people 'need' about 7,5 hours a night to wake up fresh, rested and before the alarm clock) is less important than the quality of your sleep. If you don't sleep that deeply, your body doesn't rest and you can't recover as well. Result? Less energy and, for example, more hunger (sleep is also important if you want to lose weight, and not just because your brain kick-starts your metabolism during your sleep). Most people (note: everyone is different) have an ideal sleeping pattern where you sleep between 22.00:7.00 and 22.00:2.00. The hours between 20:30 and XNUMX:XNUMX are the most important. Easy to say when you have a little one who wakes up a few times a night… We will dedicate another article to that; now it is about grown-ups. What we found interesting is that naps of XNUMX-XNUMX minutes during the day really help. Why so short? Because otherwise you get into your 'deep' sleep with the result that you suffer from it at night.

What also really helps, we learned, is to get used to a ritual that relaxes you. Strangely enough, age-old tricks and your mother's tips can actually work: make sure you don't get stimuli from TV, laptops and telephone 90 minutes before you go to sleep. From those things. Read a book (see also Barts Book Club) and take a (warm) bath or a (hot) shower. We knew the former, I sometimes did the latter, the man never did. Since we do that, we are both much more relaxed and we really fall asleep better.

For us, this certainly also has to do with scent. From around 21 p.m., when our son is sleeping really well, the entire top floor smells heavenly. The Ritual of Jing – big fat tip.

This new collection from Rituals is inspired by the ancient Chinese concept of Jing, which stands for calm, silence and tranquility. There is a relax line and a tow line. The products promise to help calm your mind and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. WellI think that's good timing.

The Sleep line has a very nice and very serene scent based on essential oils of lavender and palo santo, which promise to promote sleep (I'm not sure if it works, but it smells wonderful and it works for us). It is what you call a warm, peaceful scent. Calming, that's what it is. And, for lucky bastards: try to get your partner (mine does it) to give you a foot massage before bed. Heaven is nothing compared to it. He also uses a Foot Mask, also in The Ritual of Jing collection. Apply cream and just press, squeeze and knead. Finally, apply some Pillow Mist to the bedding (let it soak in). And then a kiss drop. Sleep well.

(For the next morning, the relaxation line is wonderful to wake up peacefully. The Foaming Shower Gel contains lotus and jujube: in traditional Chinese medicine, the seed of the jujube or red date is used to reduce stress and calm the mind. Then the Body Scrub with small bamboo granules in a rich cream.

Power moment

Power moment

As mentioned above, taking a moment for yourself really makes a difference. If possible, try to take a moment to relax halfway through the day. Light a scented candle to dream away for a while. Look at the flame of the candle and breathe in and out calmly. Pay attention to your heart rate. Have a cup of tea (the Relax Tea from The Ritual of Jong contains chamomile and verbena that help you relax) and give yourself a hand massage. Rub the nourishing hand lotion into your hands and give your knuckles and cuticles some extra love. Using your index finger and thumb, apply firm pressure to the skin between your index finger and the thumb of your other hand. Massage this pressure point for 5 seconds, making sure to breathe slowly and deeply.

That said, not a word of the above is a lie and The Ritual of Jing is an asset to our home.
