Toasties that will make you cry
What turns out? So one sandwich is really not the same as the other. But if you know which cheese is best on a sandwich, you've come a long way. And then it's easy: bread, slice of cheese, sandwich maker on and go. These are the tastiest sandwiches (with much more than just delicious cheese).
Kudos, because there is some kind of sandwich trend going on. We are fans of Bart. You replace the bread with a tortilla. How? Now take note:
- You put the tortilla down
- Cut from the bottom of the tortilla in half
- Now you have, as it were, four squares, you are going to make quarters, do you still understand?
- On each square, four in total, you can now place/spread different ingredients
- You fold from box one, where you cut, upwards (topped and all)
- From top to right
- From right to left
- The last step from the left down
- Now you have a triangle
- Just pop it in the pan and you're done
Just to be clear: all sandwich recipes below can also be made the tortilla way.
The secret lies in the pH value of the cheese. Something about numbers, something about acidity, we don't know exactly, we don't really want to know either. What matters is that the pH value makes the cheese creamy. In other words; you want that. More important to know is the value that makes the cheese the tastiest and smoothest (when it comes to sandwich purposes): 5.5. Which cheeses have these values? Gruyère and Manchego for example. Gruyère is a (semi) hard cheese with a sweet, nutty taste. The Manchego is a hard sheep's cheese from Spain. This cheese also has a sweet, nutty taste. Both cheeses were made to melt. Just go to the cheesemonger and make these fantastic sandwiches.
Ingredients:
- 4 large sandwiches
- 2 slices of white ham
- 200 g Comté (or Beaufort or Emmentaler whichever you prefer)
- 15 cl cream
- 2 pinches of Esplette pepper
- Butter salt (for frying)
- Chives
- Salt
- Pepper
This is how you do it:
Grate half the Comté and cut the rest into thin strips. Melt the grated cheese with the crème fraîche in a pan over medium heat. Once the mixture is smooth, add the Espelette pepper, salt and pepper. Place the cheese cream, slices of Comté cheese and a slice of ham on four slices, then cream with chopped chives and then place the other slice of bread on top. Heat a pan over medium heat with butter and then add the croque monsieur. Turn them over when they are golden brown on one side and remove them when they are golden brown on the other side with the smooth cheese.
Ingredients:
- Bread (focaccia) or tortilla
- Mozzarella for künefe dessert
- Tomato
- Pesto
- Avocado
- Chorizo
This is how you do it:
Lay the tortilla down and cut it 1/4 in. Spread the tortilla with pesto and some tomato slices on the first surface, mozzarella slices on the second surface, the avocado on square three and the chorizo on square four. Now you fold everything, layer upon layer, into a kind of triangle. Simply heat the pan and you're done. Would you rather have a focaccia? Also very tasty.
Did you know that wine is also damn tasty with a sandwich? These are the tastiest wines under a tenner.

To be honest, this one tastes best with white bread, just like it actually is collision with a sandwich. First some red pesto, on top of that chorizo and chicken fillet, some cubes of feta, spinach leaves and then dried tomatoes. Put the whole thing in the sandwich maker or in the pan and you're done. Want something to dip in? Then guacamole is highly recommended. Mexican vibes it is.
