What the f*ck is a Chakra?

We've all heard of it before, somewhere in one corridor or another, but what exactly is it and what should we actually do with it? That's still quite abracadabra for many of us. So here - once and for all - a no-nonsense answer to the question: What the f*ck is a chakra?

Let's just say that Chakras are quite elusive. You cannot have a CT scan made of it and there is no scientific 'proof' of its existence. You should mainly feel chakras (Some people also seem to be able to perceive them, but we will leave that fact for what it is for now).

Chakras are also called energy centers in our body. These centers absorb energy from our surrounding force field and ensure a flow of life energy in our body. You could compare it with a WiFi network. If there are no blockages between your mobile and the source of the signal, you have nice and fast internet. The more walls or other obstacles, the worse the signal. That's how it works with the energy channels in your body. When there is a blockage in a chakra (for example due to trauma, negative thoughts or poor self-care), the energy can no longer flow properly and you will notice this in your daily functioning. This gives mental complaints or diseases the opportunity to develop.

Officially there are 114 chakras, but today we will stick to the 7 most important ones. Each of these 7 has its own color and jhe spine connects them together. Which 7 are they exactly and what do they stand for? Komtie:

1. Root chakra (red)

1. Root chakra (red)

This chakra is literally the base and is located at the bottom of your spine. When this chakra is in balance you are stable and feel satisfied, safe and confident. You have enough energy and have both feet on the ground. When this chakra is out of balance you often notice it due to restlessness, anxiety and a lack of self-confidence.

Sacral chakra (orange)

Sacral chakra (orange)

This chakra is connected to your emotions, feelings, creativity and relationships. If this chakra is in balance, you are in touch with your feelings, you can express your emotions well and you have sufficient self-confidence. When this is out of balance you can be oversensitive or have difficulty processing emotions. It can manifest itself physically in, for example, PMS or bladder problems.

Navel chakra (yellow)

Navel chakra (yellow)

This chakra represents happiness, energy and self-esteem, determines your personal strength and also determines the energy you radiate outwardly. When this chakra is balanced you are physically and mentally balanced. You can more easily accept yourself and others as they are and you will succeed in achieving what you want to achieve.

Heart chakra (green)

Heart chakra (green)

This chakra represents love, warmth, trust, security and balance. When your heart chakra is balanced you experience success, connection and love for yourself and others. When this is out of balance you may have difficulty with social contacts, feel inferior or be afraid of rejection. When this chakra is open too far again (apparently that is still possible), you may suffer from the so-called 'helper syndrome' and always want to help others (but forget yourself).

Throat chakra (blue)

Throat chakra (blue)

This chakra is located near your thyroid gland. Your metabolism plays a major role in this chakra, it symbolizes daring to express yourself and thereby cleanse yourself. When this chakra is in balance, you can express your emotions and feelings to the outside world. When this is out of balance, you may have difficulty speaking, you may ignore yourself or shut down in conversations. You can also literally have a sore throat.

Forehead chakra (indigo)

Forehead chakra (indigo)

This chakra is also sometimes called the third eye. It is your conscience and it is about the choices you make in your life. Here you develop empathic abilities. When this chakra is in balance you are intuitive and spiritually developed. When this chakra is underdeveloped it is difficult to connect with your intuition and inner wisdom.

7. Crown Chakra (purple or white)

7. Crown Chakra (purple or white)

This last chakra ensures that all your energy flows optimally through your body and therefore ensures unity. You will feel well balanced and have confidence in yourself and your life when this chakra is balanced. It is also said that this chakra connects you to the Divine and the Universe. When it is underdeveloped, you do not experience these spiritual feelings.

So far the theory, now we have to get to work. Because not only trauma and negative thoughts can imbalance your chakras, stress and chemically processed products such as food, cosmetics and cleaning products can also cause this. There are many theories that make us believe that things such as wearing clothes in certain colors or the effect of gemstones contribute to regaining that balance, but we believe it is mainly just a matter of using a little common sense and so now & then just go for the healthy lifestyle (and therefore also take a yoga class every now and then (told you so).
