Everything you need to know for a weekend in Leuven
Belgium, we love it! A weekend away without flying, trains or having to sit in the car for hours (at least... If you live in Groningen, it's still quite far, but you get the point), but a real big taste of foreign countries. Antwerp and Ghent are of course classics, and rightly so. But did you know that Belgium has many more great cities that are perfect for a few days away?
Take now LeuvenThis city has everything you need for a weekend getaway: delicious food, cozy beer cafes where you can taste the best Belgian beers, and cozy streets with historic buildings.
If you want to explore a (new) city, you prefer to be centrally located, right in the heart of the city. Martin's Klooster Hotel is a four-minute walk from the Grote Markt – it can hardly be more central. After a long day of exploring the city and hopping from terrace to terrace, it is wonderful to flop into a real hotel bed with nice pillows. Or relax in the (bubble) bath with a good book. At Martin's Klooster you are in the right place.
Leuven is full of cozy (and tasty) restaurants, but sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. If you want to eat in the center, you can go to Shack join in. Baracca is a restaurant where you can find all kinds of bites can order to share (we love that). From Wood oven pizzas to bao buns, a little bit of everything. In the summer they have a nice terrace outside that they convert into a cozy, wooden extension of the restaurant in the winter.
If you want to have a fancy bite to eat, Gloria is the place to go. For Gloria you walk about fifteen minutes from the center, and that is wonderful after all the delicious food that is presented to you. A menu full of delicious wines and dishes for an evening of extensive dining and a nice after-dinner chat.
Time for lunch, exploring a city is not done on an empty stomach. When you take a look at the Instagram account of Eclectic are you convinced, and rightly so. In addition to yoghurt and salads, they have fresh roasted sourdough breads on the menu. The breads have toppings such as figs with prosciutto or fresh hummus with pomegranate. We have tapas lunch at The Optimist, nice in the center of Leuven. This is not a lunch place where you order a toast but where you order different (hot) dishes. When ordering the dishes you can choose from three sizes, when you want a full meal you can go for medium or large, if you share (about three) snacks with someone you can easily go for the small option.
When you are in Leuven Madmum also not to be missed. This breakfast, brunch and lunch spot has four locations in the city. The fact that they have more locations certainly does not mean that every location looks standard (the same). Every location has a different industrial interior. From bao buns to salads and simple toast, it is all on the menu of Madmum.
Want to try a specialty beer you haven't heard of? Then MALT the place. Their menu is a huge list of changing beers. Can't see the forest for the trees? Then ask one of the tappers for advice; they can recommend a beer for you. At MALZ you can also order beer boards, a kind of snack board with three different beers. If you consider yourself a beer connoisseur you can also order a surprise tasting board, if you guess the beers correctly (on tap) you get an extra beer from MALZ.
Belgium is known for its beer, and Leuven is no exception. On every street corner you will find a modern or classic beer pub. Are you standing on the Grote Markt and walking towards the church? Then you will end up at Leuven Central, an authentic pub with an extensive menu full of specialty beers.
There are many breweries in Leuven, fun to take a look and of course taste some of the Leuven beer. brewery De Coureur they brew their own beer, and you can taste them all with a tasting board (and a snack).
In addition to taking a look at the (many) breweries, you can take a nice walk in Leuven, the city itself is nice to stroll through, but there are a number of places you can add to your list. The Begijnhof is the student place of Leuven, the buildings are from the 13th century. Nice to walk through the streets. Do you want to go a bit further out of the city? Then walk towards the Park Abbey, one of the best preserved abbeys in Belgium. Here you can walk through nature and visit the museum that is attached to it. You have to like this, because you mainly get to hear history stories. Nice to visit the library of Leuven. You can climb this (if you are not afraid of heights). Once at the top of the clock you have a 360 degree view view about Leuven and you will hotspots that you have visited.
