Summer in the mountains: Méribel, France
Oh, Méribel! Located in one of the world's largest ski areas, Les 3 Vallées in France, with no less than 600 km of slopes. Every year from April, the snow-covered slopes change into vast valleys, green pine forests, with a snow-capped mountain peak here and there that remains. Of course there are countless outdoor activities in the summer, but Méribel also offers a luxurious wellness experience for those who are not into active sports. And let's not forget the delicious raclette and cheese fondue. Yes, please!
Oh and Méribel is perfect for families, from young to old. Why? Because almost everything here is child-friendly, from the restaurants to childcare in the accommodations, to endless fun. Our list is also useful: This is what you do on holiday with children!
De Three Valleys consist of several areas, of which Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens will probably sound familiar to winter sports enthusiasts. Les 3 Vallées is considered the world's largest contiguous winter sports area.
Of these three valleys is Meribel the ideal choice for a holiday with the whole family.
Let's start right away with one of our favorite activities: horseback riding! A really nice way to see the area. Suitable from young to old. And every level. In other words, from small ponies to large stallions.
Add this Ranch Nordique. And why here? The horses are incredibly sweet and used to people, with cute names such as Jumpy and Flanelle. You can even visit the reindeer – because yes, they have them too! Maya, the manager, takes excellent care of the horses, and the ranch has received several certificates for the good care of the animals. That's always reassuring to know. At Ranch Nordique you are in good hands, both you and the animals.
This lake is located in the middle of a beautiful valley, surrounded by the nature reserve Plan the Tueda, with a beautiful view of Mont Vallon, the proud highest peak of Méribel. In winter this valley is frequented by cross-country skiers, but in summer there is plenty of room for walking. You can walk around the lake or up the mountains through the pine trees. You determine the length of your walk yourself. And when you get hungry, you can stop by Restaurant La Tueda for a delicious lunch on the comfortable sun loungers by the lake. Good to know, swimming in the lake is not allowed because it is a protected nature reserve.
What did you think about golfing in the Alps? Méribel has a great one golf course: located at an altitude of 1.500 meters and spread over 35 hectares with an 18-hole course with breathtaking views over the mountains.
Or enjoy clambering in it climbing park? From the age of 6 (accompanied by a parent) you can go into the trees. Most routes are accessible from a length of 1.40 meters (even without guidance). But there is also a mini adventure park for the little ones from the age of three. And of course it's also fun for adults, with no fewer than 80 different routes to be found in Le Bois d'Arbin. Parco Branche Meribel
Or pedal far away. Because riding a bike is totally the thing in Méribel; Electric mountain bikes in particular are popular locals. We understand, with all those mountains. Electric mountain bikes are here just for rent. Top for Col de la Loze: This exceptionally beautiful cycling route through the mountains has a gradient of more than 20% in some parts, making it a quite challenging tour. But the breathtaking views you encounter along the way make it all more than worth it.
It is good to know that for many activities the summer season usually runs from the end of June to the end of August. Then the green mountains turn into white slopes again.
Want to recover from all the activities? Or do you prefer a day at the spa to all those adventurous trips? Then you've come to the right place in Méribel. Because there are enough wellness options to get you through the entire week. You come back completely zen.
You come across several refuges, but... Refuge de la Traye is the first high-end option in the French Alps, for sleeping but also with an extensive wellness center. Think of a sauna with a view over the mountains, relaxing massages, and an outdoor jacuzzi. But also a special Japanese dome sauna, micro needling, hydra facials. And the view from the sun loungers of the outdoor pool is not bad either. Also wonderful with a book during the beautiful summer days.
On the Méribel website you will find even more wellness options such as shiatsu, yoga meditation walk and more.
Méribel also has all kinds of exciting activities that are great for the summer. Admire the green mountains from the air during it paragliding or climb the 14 meter high climbing wall up in the village.
You can also climb the highest peak in France, via the Via Ferrata de Burgin. With a Via Ferrata, which means 'iron road', you secure yourself up the mountain using iron pins, hooks and carabiners. The Burgin takes you to an altitude of about 2700 meters! That is certainly not nothing and you get the view of all the other surrounding mountain peaks in return. The level is average and it will take you all day. If this sounds too extreme, there's also the Via Ferrata from La Rosière, ideal for beginners or with the kids. You will have completed this route within 2,5 hours. The most impressive thing? The suspension bridge that hangs straight through the valley!
Or choose the Via ferrata Cascade de la Fraîche in Pralognan. This is nice and short but intense and ends with two cool zip lines of 200 and 400 meters long.
Fancy a glass of wine or a thick one pint in the sun? Then you can contact us Jacks . village terrace. Both places are open all year round for live music and a tasty bite to eat.
Nice to know: while Val Thorens is popular with the Dutch people, with a full Dutch Week, Méribel is known among the British and Scots. So if you're not a fan of typical après-ski music, Méribel the place to be, because here you can simply sing along to English hits. And let's be honest, we certainly don't turn down a little Abba every now and then.
