15 X THE BEST ADDRESSES FOR PLANT-BASED FOOD IN ROTTERDAM – the home delivery and takeaway update
There are few more food trends 'going on' than there is with the 'vegan trend'. A trend, yes, and that may sound a bit disrespectful, but we certainly don't mean it that way. It is only to be welcomed that plant-based cooking and eating is the way it is in the picture stands. Firstly, it is always a good thing that more and more people are becoming aware of what they put in their mouths (tabee unnecessary animal suffering, greetings obesity) and - certainly not unimportant - secondly, eating plant-based nutrients has been proven to be good for the body. and members. We did not come up with that ourselves, it is true: various thorough studies, including from the Health Council and the RIVM, show that eating less animal food and a (partially) plant-based diet contributes to your health (and it is also less harmful to the environment - we call that win-win).
The restaurants in Rotterdam that we believe deserve a big compliment, drenched in gold, for their dishes made with only vegetable ingredients. Ok, there are some who cook largely plant-based (it is usually indicated on the menu). Here it comes: the best places for plant-based food in Rotterdam (in random order), which, because Bart Stays Inside, also deliver to your home or where you can pick up. Don't mention it.
Food shop, caterer, food shop, neighborhood restaurant... Call it whatever you want, Westerkaatje in Rotterdam has it all, and at two locations. You can pick up snacks and meals if you don't have time to cook and want something healthy, pure and special. But we would say: sit back, order a bottle of wine and choose a few different dishes from the menu. Not standard plant-based, but often. Leek fritters, for example, with wild garlic and currants, the sauce of which is prepared with vegetable margarine. Pea soup. An anti-paste dish with samphire and coriander pesto (also with vegetable margarine) for dipping. And what about hazelnut falafels? Also nice: The Westerkratje, for yourself and for the mini. This crate is filled with a glass of soup, salad, pasta and a dessert, the Children's crate contains pizza or pasta plus dessert.
Breakfast-galore and still unsurpassed when it comes to a plant-based breakfast in Rotterdam. The menu includes fruit crumble, giraffe coffee, plant-based pastries, homemade muesli bars, smoothies and juices and hot snacks such as sweet potato soup. Beautiful place, that's for sure, with lots of greenery, of course. There is also an extensive wine list, to balance things out. Although we prefer to go to Bertmans for their plant-based pancakes. These are great, as is the cashew cream on top.

SUE stole our hearts before we even thought about a (partially) plant-based diet. Way before that. Because Sue is one to love, as she is the queen of the tastiest sugar-free, gluten-free, raw, vegan sweets. Mega-responsible, mega-delicious. Sue has about 120 points of sale, but Rotterdam is and remains the home base of Kim Sue Palm where she runs her unmissable, more than attractive store. And another nice news... SUE now also has a webshop where you can order their 'sweet without sugar'. How delicious is that?
Another favorite for a snack is The Tea Lab on the Nieuwe Binnenweg, in the heart of Rotterdam. The Tea Lab serves an excellent vegan high tea (recommended!) and even if you want to sit down a bit less, the plant-based banana bread and the large bowl of soy yoghurt with fruit are recommended.

Opposite the library and the Markthal you will find Rotterdam's answer to the Hawaiian pokébowl trend (a kind of sushi in a bowl): Pokébowl Rotterdam. The idea is simple: put together your own bowl with rice (possibly fish) or tofu and vegetables and start spooning.
Vegan cake! Vegan cake! Vegan cake! Okay, Lof der Zoetheid is also perfect for an extensive lunch, or a quick lunch thanks to the Lof der Zoetheid pick-up counter around the corner from the lunchroom. Ideal.
Plant-based cupcakes for the enthusiast. And for the soon to be lover, because there is a good chance that you will find yourself in that category after tasting the sweet cakes from Heavenly Cupcakes. The business is located on Vlietlaan in Kralingen. The best are and remain the cupcakes, the toppings of which are also made with, among other things, 100% vegetable margarine.

If you ever visit Amsterdam, you must have been living under a rock if you missed the salad concept SLA. The small, handsome chain is popping up all over the city and doing so with verve. And hit, that SLA, you could say. The entrepreneurs have not yet found their way to Rotterdam (yet!), but fortunately the people of Mr Salad have. A salad bar indeed, what's in a name, and a good one! Bonus points also for the looks of Mr Salad, both around you and in your salad bowl: even a salad hater will probably want to eat the rainbow salad. Mr. Salad also delivers, so if you ever find yourself in bed with a hangover, you now know where to go for a good portion of vegetables.
The country's first all you can eat vegan restaurant has opened in Rotterdam. At Rozey Rotterdam you can enjoy unlimited vegetarian or vegan dining for an entire evening for a fixed price, that is the simple and therefore simply excellent concept. And that in a tasteful setting. With an exciting menu that is just as tasty as the surroundings of Rozey Rotterdam.
Of course you already know them from Amsterdam, but the Vegan Junk Food Bar has also had a location in Rotterdam for a while now. Crazy! With completely vegan dishes such as sweet potato fries, vegan bitterballen and burgers, the Vegan Junk Food Bar is a real vegan galore!
You will find it right in the heart of Rotterdam all day, plant based fabric restaurant.. BACKYARD. At BACKYARD you can enjoy the tastiest dishes and drinks all day long. (even vegan wines are on the menu). And oh yes, something fun... BACKYARD can also be found in the Rotterdam food halls.
These addresses below are currently completely closed, but when they reopen you will be able to enjoy all the goodies they have to offer!
With surprising and delicious plant-based dishes, lovely staff and a prime location off the beaten path of Rotterdam (but close to Blaak station), Dumbo is worth a visit. And whether you can only enjoy good food at Dumbo? Definitely not: Dumbo Rotterdam (also) excels in its cocktails.
You can eat the tastiest avocado toast at Lilith and although the place does not actually fall under the vegan heading, you can always ask about the plant-based options; the Lilith girls create a breakfast for you with all the love and pleasure. And further? Breakfast and coffee all day long, that's the basics. Pancakes and avocado on the menu – success guaranteed. However, make no mistake: looks and smart time-related choices alone won't cut it and the quality of Lilith is genuinely good. It is therefore not surprising that business 1 became much too small, a number 2 was added and both small addresses were exchanged for one large business, not far from Lilith number 1. Number three became bigger, even more beautiful, there is coffee from own brokerage, alcohol and dinner are also served and Lilith Coffee has been – duh – a success from day 1.
First things first: The nicest, tastiest, coolest vegan restaurant in Rotterdam is restaurant Gare du Nord with flying colors. The menu changes weekly, as befits a good, fresh restaurant where the chef likes to challenge himself and cook with the seasons. This brings us back to the crispy summer white cabbage salad with orange vinaigrette, parsley and Ligurian black olives served with a herb broth. The red pepper filled with spiced couscous, cucumber relish and a lemon cream dressing. And the pickled mango with caramelized walnut and a scoop of ice cream. Hungry, nun? And we haven't even told you about the location of Gare du Nord: an old train carriage. Certainly not a place where you just go for a quick bite to eat; way too romantic. No, Gare du Nord is highly recommended for a special occasion. And since Gare du Nord is a 100% vegan restaurant, vegetable margarine is used in the kitchen - of course, as they say themselves. Everything that is baked and roasted goes into the 'butter look-a-like' based on vegetable oils.
The idea is simple: make good food that tastes better. Better in your mouth, in your head and in your heart. That slogan alone makes you give Spirit a visit, don't you? At the friendly restaurant you will only find dishes that are prepared every day with respect for people, animals, the environment and the economy. This means that everything is 100% organic, 100% vegetarian and the majority of the dishes are plant-based. The staff makes everything themselves every day, using only seasonal ingredients. As a guest, you serve yourself from the buffet and only pay for what you serve. That is fair for big and small eaters and it also results in less waste. Spirit is located in a spacious building on the corner of Mariniersweg and Goudsesingel. All dishes and drinks are also easy to take with you. Moreover, the lovely people at Spirit use vegetable margarine in various dishes. In the divine oatcake, for example, and in the cinnamon rolls, although the very best is the chocolate-raspberry cake – divine.
