Alfred Hotels, Biarritz

Once you've been to Biarritz, you understand why everyone keeps coming back. Old chic meets laid-back surf culture: a coastline that attracts surfers from all over the world, a touch of faded glory that keeps it charming, and a je ne sais quoi that hangs in the air here a bit more strongly than elsewhere in France. The hospitality industry is excellent, the market halls are a treat in themselves, and you can enjoy a lovely stroll through the streets in your flip-flops. Where to sleep? You can do so at the handsome Alfred Hotels Les Halles, right in the city center.

The hotel is located in three village houses on the Rue Gambetta, next to the market halls and within walking distance of the ocean. The 35 rooms are each beautifully decorated and have a good bed. The interior and decor are all French craftsmanship. We love it.

Alfred Hotels is a relatively young brand (the first location opened in 2023), founded by three entrepreneurs with an impressive track record at Hyatt and Accor, among others. Their concept: a three-star hotel that feels like more. No unnecessary frills, just the things that matter. Breakfast is a treat: an extensive buffet with freshly baked bread, local products, Basque cheeses, and freshly squeezed juice. And for the evening, there is La Gambette where you share tapas and homemade cocktails under the lights.

Another smart move: the concierge services via WhatsApp. No chatbot or clunky form, but a real person who gives restaurant tips, arranges e-bikes, or has champagne delivered to your room. Pets are welcome, by the way (no extra charge), and anyone wanting to hit the waves can book a surf camp (highly recommended!) books in collaboration with the Jo Moraiz-surf school on the Côte des Basques. Room, breakfast, surf lesson: everything arranged.

Alfred Hotels now has eight locations in France (from Beaune to Monaco), and quite a few more are in the pipeline. In addition to Les Halles, there is also a location in Biarritz in Port Vieux, a stone's throw from the old port, with equally fine rooms and service.
