When in Stockholm: here you can eat the best cookies in the city
Who says Stockholm, says kanelbullar. But did you know that you will also find the best cookies there? And actually not just the best, but also the most special. Each one freshly baked with the best local ingredients, different types of flour and in special flavors.
Yep, you read that correctly. And who is now thinking: who are you kidding with your different types of flour? Like hell, go to Stockholm to taste what it's missing. Where do you go for those cookies? Nasty Krümel Cookies & Crumbs to be precise.
Krümel is the cookie bakery from entrepreneur, baker and Instagrammer Kaja Hengstenberg, who spread her wings to Stockholm four years ago and, a few years later, devoted herself to nothing more and less than baking cookies. And with success, because she bakes hundreds of cookies a day to supply Stockholm with them sugar rush.
In a city that lives on coffee and fika, starting a cookie shop would be a logical step, you would think. Yet there was no bakery that focused on cookies or was really good at it – it is the cinnamon buns which dominates.
Until Crumbs opened its doors a year and a half ago and the city learned that a cookie really goes with coffee.
Founder Kaja Hengstenberg: “During the pandemic I started baking cookies, which I then distributed via Instagram sold and sent by post. That went so well that I started the store soon after.”
What makes the cookies so special? "The taste, the fresh and local ingredients and the different types of flower that we use,” she explains.
“Our bestsellers are the classics chocolate chip cookie with Maldon sea salt en crème brûlée with vanilla custard, but I like to play with flavors.”
What else will you find at Krümel? Think about miso, black sesame, double chocolate with crispy chili oil en tomato vanilla cookies. Exciting flavors and the display changes regularly.
It is the texture of a cookie that makes it so exceptionally tasty, Kaja believes. “A really good cookie is soft on the inside en crispy on the edges. He is buttery, but not greasy. And without large lumps of sugar.”
It's about a balance between all those factors, combined with the best chocolate. And to achieve all of the above, Kaja uses different types of grains from a farmer in western Sweden and French Valrhona chocolate.
So, when in Stockholm, skip the kanelbullar (did I really say this?!) and go to Krümel. Tip: Order a glass of fresh milk (from a farmer on the Swedish island of Gotland) to dip the cookies in.
