Spain is oh so close and oh so nice for a weekend (or longer) away. Plus: a city trip is always possible. So it's time to book a ticket to one of these great places to stay: 13 x nicest boutique hotels in Spain.
Hotel, bar, cocktail bar-lobby-restaurant (Libertine), coffee corner, must-go restaurant (with the fantastic name Elephant, Crocodile and Monkey), juice bar and roof terrace. Ha! Let's go back: Casa Bonay opened in early 2016 behind the doors of a neoclassical facade in the heart of Barcelona. The house was designed in 1869 by Francisco Batlle (that's a 'thing') for a wealthy Catalan family and, recently, was updated by the Brooklynbased designers from Studio Tack, slightly inspired for the Ace Hotel (heck, who doesn't do that). The result was hotel Casa Bonay; an impressive location that, in addition to tourists, attracts a mixed bag of local creatives.
As the name suggests, the hotel is located in a former cotton factory and the decor is classic and modern and very photogenic (every five minutes someone is Instagramming, and who can blame them). From top to bottom: there is one rooftop swimming pool. A ROOFTOP POOL. Something that, strangely enough, you don't encounter very often in Barcelona. At the end of the day you have a beautiful view of the sunset and the Sagrada Família from the pool edge. A bed for two costs 200 euros per night but, as always the tip: a breakfast from the buffet in Batuar is only 18 euros per person and in fact the of every luxury hotel.

Chic bohemian at its best, on top of a Spanish mountain in Mallorca, run by a Dutch couple (okay, by the lady of the house) who live there full-time. The house can be found online under two different titles: Osa Major and on Facebook nowadays also as Boutique Homestay Mallorca, but we are really talking about the same place, I promise. Everything in the house - thanks to the natural materials, the concrete floor, the traditional Spanish and Moroccan details, the tade lacquer on the walls of the bathroom and bedrooms, the Spanish sun and the fantastic gray tones of the furnishings - seems immediately provided. of an Instagram filter, and you can't help but return completely relaxed after a week at Boutique Homestay Mallorca. Promise.

Ah, there we have it again: the always nice Málaga. Good food (did someone say fresh fish?), lots of things to do within an hour's drive and the oh-so-nice climate. In comes El Molino Santiseban, a beautiful B&B about a 45-minute drive from Málaga airport. Complete built in authentic Andalusian style and the most beautiful of all? The covered patio with fountain and the view of the 600-year-old water mill where the owners live. Imagine yourself among the orange and olive groves and close to the Sierra de Las Nieves National Park and the Moorish towns of Guara and Tolox. In any case, there is plenty to do, so spend the night at El Molino Santisteban, Spain.
Margot House: a hotel for a maximum of 18 people spread over 9 rooms is located right on the Passeig de Gràcia (in the heart of the city) and is beautiful. Lots of white, lots of daylight, hanging plants and a well-chosen color. And, unsurprisingly, the cheapest double rooms are not that expensive at all! You can sleep in a real Was for 170 euros per room per night. That can be cheaper in Barcelona, but still. Who is Margot? Margot Tenenbaum played by Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums, a Wes Anderson film from 2002. He says this about it himself: 'Margot, is a deep woman with a hidden side to her, giving off a glamorous and almost elusive feel.'
The rooms are nice: super bed, bathroom with rain shower, bath and minibar where you will also find an erotic package with condom, vibrator and teasing plume - How nice! How naughty! – but that's not the reason why you'd prefer to stay holed up here all weekend. No, that's because of the restaurant in the chic sixties Mad Menatmosphere, with good bites and a relaxed team, the rooftop bar with breathtaking views over the city, breakfast with hams, cheeses and delicious date cake and the great lobby for a pre dinner-drink.
Who isn't? suckers before and after, old school class hotels? Then there is Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville. A dream of a lobby, luxurious beds, golden taps and, as befits a class hotel, the heart of the city. This could easily have been in LA, thanks to the beautiful people who are there in large numbers at the pool. By the way, it is not necessary to book a room in such hotels. Have lunch or a drink at the bar for the ultimate luxurious feeling. Not enough? The next day you know your way around, the staff thinks you are staying there and you can lie by the pool with peace of mind.
“Family Run Organic Farm Retreat for Foodies and Families” After that first line on the website you know: this is where you want to go. Half an hour's drive from Malaga, the fun starts on the long driveway full of eucalyptus trees and once at the top you can have fun with an unparalleled view over the Mediterranean Sea and the natural park in which Cortijo Juan Salvador is located, the authentic atmosphere of the building, the warm welcome and delicious home-made wines and food.
A bit of Rock & Roll, marble (lots of marble, white or black, both good), good, somewhat dark music from the speakers and hosts and ladies who may walk around in jeans, but who understand what hospitality is. Well, there's the Hotel Tótem in Madrid, in the fancy Salamanca district. The small hotel is located behind a discreet entrance to a 19th century building among a variety of chic and hip small fashion boutiques. Deep, warm colors, five floors, 64 rooms, lots of wood, lots of depth, moody blue and many large windows that provide views over the city center of Madrid or over the bar in the courtyard of the building. Yes, a place like that.

A nice and affordable (read: quite cheap even) hotel, or actually: a handful of nice hotels in the heart of the city with a fantastic breakfast (a rarity); that is Hotel Praktik. Praktik has multiple locations in Barcelona and one location in Madrid. The names of the hotels are nice, which reveal their theme. For example, there is Praktik Garden (an absolute favorite!), a hotel that is designed as one large garden. The reception is full of plants, in the conservatory you will find a sofa with a palm tree-like print and there is a beautiful courtyard with large green plants, wooden tables, lounge chairs and those cozy little lights. All others also have their own theme and must of course also be tested.
In the village of Lloseta, in the middle of the island (but a little further north), The Pink Pepper Tree hotel with 8 rooms (all equally beautiful) of the old converted authentic finca is run by the extremely hospitable Jacqueline Rozenhart and Glynn Jones. Jacqueline also cooks excellently.

Your own tree house over an hour's drive from Barcelona (and therefore perfect to combine with a city trip). The cabins of Cabanes als Arbres can be found in the Guilleries forest - where electricity, running water and internet are scarce. What there are are ten wooden tree houses that float three, five or ten meters above the ground and which you can enter via a walkway or wooden ladder. Ergo: add sangria and enjoy back to basics overnight stay and an unparalleled view of the Montseny and the Pyrenees.
