Tips for budget-proof/cheap eating out in New York
A return ticket to New York, that is The Big Apple, on the schedule? Besides the fact that we would all sign up for that, it is nice to start this trip prepared. Of course, during such a trip you always spend slightly more than you had hoped. A souvenir here, a new pair of shoes there, you know the drill. But we also have to eat. How nice if you can do both of these, without (too) major damage to your wallet. We searched budget-proof restaurants, shops, pizzerias, take-aways and all that kind of business, all for a reasonable price. Here's ours budget-proof dining tips in New York.

Pizza lover or not (does that even exist?)… Let's face it, pizza tastes better in New York. But where do you eat the very best? And also budget-proof? We looked into that for you. Here are two spots where we think you can just...check when it comes to pizzas.
Artichoke basille's pizza – Order the tastiest here Team Building slices for only 5 euros. They have eight different types. Vegetarian, with fish or meat and topped with really good mozzarella. Big appetite? You can also go for eight pieces. Nice for on the go.
Scarr's – One of the best in town. They do their thing with the famous Zingy sauce, the pizza does not have a soft crust, the cheese is good and the pizza is not greasy. Eat the point on the go or walk to the back where you can hang out with your point and pint of beer 80's American bar.
Fortunately, there are many more spots where you can go. But which pizza should we go for? With or without spicy tjak? Many or few vegetables? Fish or meat? We were looking for the above quick, budget-proof pizza spots ahead of you.
We start in chinatown, because this is and remains the most affordable place to eat well. Let's kick off with favorite Great NY Noodle Town, a classic. This Cantonese spot is known for its wontons and one of its top dishes is the siu mei, or roasted meat. Furthermore, the menu is full of classics such as noodles and rice dishes. They also serve seasonally specials, such as the salt baked crabs. Who knows, you might be lucky. In short, a favorite stop for hungry tourists or locals. So whether you're looking for a quick lunch, a casual dinner or just a... late night snack, Great NY Noodletown is a good idea.
We'll stay in for a while China Town, simply because it is so tasty, fun and budget-proof is. Start your day with the tiny one foodtruck Yi Ji Shi Mo Noodle Corp. This spot can be found at 159 Hester Street, where to buy great breakfast noodles. You can go there every morning from 07:00 am for cheung fun. You're probably thinking, huh, what is that? Logically. They are steamed rice rolls from the Chinese province of Guangdong. The cooked rice is mixed with water, which they pour in a wafer-thin layer over a steel plate. It is then sprinkled with a topping of your choice. Then it is steamed, cut into ribbons, rolled up and... voilà. Delicious with soy sauce or Siracha. You eat it on the steps next to the shop or you take it with you to the park further away.
Would you rather have a classic American breakfast? Then you are there Barney Greengass at the right place. This spot is in the Upper West Side and has been around for almost a century. You can have breakfast or brunch here with one of the best bagels in the city. Start with the smoked fish and cream cheese. Still hungry? Go crazy and go for the pastrami sandwich. Besides the fantastic food, the place also scores points.
Fancy a good bowl of noodles for not too much money? Go to classic Momofuku. Chef David Chang opened this in 2004 noodle bar in NYC. This spot has been hailed as the rise of contemporary Asian-American cuisine by the New York Times and is known for one of the premier restaurants in America according to it Bon Appétit magazine. Promises a lot of good.
Fancy a good burger without too much fuss? Then you're in Burger Joint check. They are known as the best hamburger joint in the world. That's no small feat. They use freshly slaughtered meat and make hand-pressed burgers. No fuss, just a good burger. Grilled on an open fire and served with toppings of your choice.
More good citizens? You score that Shake Shack. Nice and cheap and one of the best burgers ever.
One of our favorites is definitely a bagel. The sweetest all-day bagels. But where in New York can you eat a really good bagel? We picked out some hotspots that you definitely don't want to miss.
Tompkins square bagels is a great success. This spot always strives for the best. They have a huge selection of bagels, just what you fancy. They pay attention to details and want to make every bagel as special as possible. This spot is a love letter to East Village, a place that feels like home. On to Brooklyn. Bee BagelSmith you can eat the tastiest toasted sesame bagels ever. Despite the enormous crowds, because everyone is a fan, they do everything they can to help you as quickly as possible. Really worth queuing for, all for that fresh and crispy bagel. But save during your trip Black Seed Bagels not about. This spot bakes wood-fired bagels, with gluten-free dough. Build your own bagel to your liking. The choice is huge, starting with the type of bagel, a spread of your choice, and toppings of your choice. We bet, after eating these bagels, you'll be a fan.
In peace and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of... Lower East Side, do you think The Then Bells. You can eat and drink at this hotspot. They have a huge number of natural wines and the food is largely tapas style. The menu is composed by the chef and supplemented with matching wines. They have it every day happy hour to 19 p.m. You can eat oysters for €00 and drink a carafe of wine. They also serve tapas, meat dishes and cheese. Everything to share.
At Katz's you can eat in the legendary deli and enjoy the most delicious sandwiches, dishes and meats. But it's really New Yorkers who made Katz's Delicatessen what it is, making Katz's part of the city's culture and history. They enthusiastically spread the word, brought their friends, wrote books, made movies and kept coming back for one pastrami on rye. They select the best cuts of meat for the corn beef, pastrimi, brisket and other fine dishes. Their cured meat and pastrimi are slowly salted so that the meat gets the best flavor, without too much mess. This can take up to 30 days. Yes, you read it correctly. But yes, everything for the best taste.
At Empellon Taqueria eat your tacos the way they should be. New York is not known for the best tacos, but after a visit to Empellón Taqueria you will talk differently. It is a local Mexican inspired bar, located in West Village. The menu consists of a mix of bar snacks and tacos. They also have a huge selection of canned beer, shot specials and cocktails. Fancy one late night snack? On Fridays and Saturdays you can score tacos for three dollars after 22 p.m.
More tacos? Go to Los Tacos No. 1. They have several branches in the city. You can pick up tacos from €4 and have them in the store or enjoy them on the go eat.
Isn't there anything more fun than wandering around and finding food and drinks everywhere? Leave Chelsea Market Well, it's a place like that, a bit like the Foodhallen, but more fun. You have a huge choice of food (and drinks). To name a few: a matcha bar, sushi, Amy's Bread (go for the oat scones!!!), wine shops, and we could go on for a while… Just a lot of good stuff.
In addition, a visit to Time Out Market also worth it. Since 2014 in New York, but also have a branch in Lisbon, which is also a favorite hotspot. You will find this market in an old warehouse in Dumbo, one of the nicest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. They have many food spots and bars, so plenty of choice.
Whole foods. Aka every veggie's dream. A huge organic supermarket (spread throughout the city). You can do your shopping there, but you can also put together your own meal, salad or other dishes. They also have a bakery section with fresh bread, pastries and a lot of cookies. You can eat it on the go, at home, or take it upstairs. Each branch has its own café, where you can sit and eat the food you purchase. Ideal and pieces cheaper then a restaurant. You can have lunch there for only ten dollars (€8,90) per person. Not expensive for a vegan, organic meal. Cheap by Dutch standards.
looking for a budget-proof breakfast spot? Bee Dunwell Donuts you can eat for five dollars per person. You get a good cup of coffee with a vegan bagel. They are also known as one of the best donut shops in the city. The products contain no animal ingredients and support local companies. Nice dessert for on the go.
Every Saturday and Sunday you will find the hip ones in Williamsburg food market Smorgasburg. You have a beautiful view over the Buenos Aires of New York. There is also music, lots of (vegan) food and places on the water. It's not dirt cheap. But cheaper than eating in a restaurant. There is a nice vibe. Recommended for Saturday or Sunday.
For even more typical American food, visit Westway Diner. You can have breakfast there, but not just any breakfast. The portions are huge, which will undoubtedly keep you full until lunch. The choice is huge. From waffles and pancakes to rösti and eggs with unlimited coffee and juice.
Another nice breakfast spot is Ellen Stardust Cafe, a little more American. The staff works with all their might, a nice experience. A bit musical vibes. But keep in mind the huge queue, many are familiar with this great spot. Logical but unfortunately.
For a healthy lunch go to Le Botaniste. A well-known name, they also have several branches in Belgium. They now have four locations in New York, so there is always room. Everything is plant-based and the food is one of the tastiest bowls.
For even more tasty treats, visit Ruby's cafe. Where you can score dishes under €10. Go for the avocado toast or one of the delicious ones bowls. They have three locations: in Soho, in the East Village and in Murray Hill.
After all that walking, because that's what you do in this gigantic city, a snack from time to time is not a problem at all. Fortunately, you have a huge amount of snacks on every street corner. For example, the well-known hot dog on the street. You can get this for an average of €1 and is the perfect snack if you have been walking a lot or are just hungry.
Fancy a tasty one? cheesecake? Bee Junior's you get the best. Not a fan? They also have gigantic milkshakes with whipped cream. Jam.
Finally, go to Ferrara Bakery & Cafe where you get the best cannoli.
