Café Beurre Amsterdam: butter, wine and everything in between

They, and then 'she' is the people behind Café Beurre Amsterdam, were not yet open or we were already smitten on the delightful blue-and-white interior of the small, initially unremarkable establishment in Amsterdam's Staatsliedenbeurt. Café Beurre sits on a corner there, with a partially covered terrace, on Van Limburg Stirumstraat. And although Beurre once started as a fully vegetarian restaurant, quite a few things have changed since then. Vegetables still play the leading role on the seasonal à la carte menu, but meat and fish are now also welcome. And that fantastic wine list? That remains, of course, a good reason to pay a visit.

Admittedly, we eat almost everything here. That is quite convenient, too, when you get to eat out often and call it work. However, that does not mean we do not have a big – very big – heart for the better vegetarian and vegan dishes. Quite the opposite. Because we love eating along with our vegetarian and vegan friends. Fortunately, it is no longer a rarity these days to find a good restaurant where vegetables play a starring role (check). Corner Store Amsterdam Also, a top performer in that category).

In the meantime, Café Beurre has grown into a lovely neighborhood spot with a changing seasonal menu. Still approachable, still a generous dose of comfort food, and still that delicious wine list. Since 2025, Rutger Boukamp and chef Wes ten Kleij have taken over the reins from founder Kim Jongbloed. What fortunately hasn't changed? The relaxed atmosphere, the comfort food, and that fantastic wine list. Some things are better left as they are.

And also good to know: where Café Beurre used to exclusively with walk-ins While it used to work, nowadays you can reserve a limited number of tables. Couldn't get a reservation? Don't panic, space is always kept free for walk-ins. So you can still just give it a try. Now that's what we like!
