Restaurant De Matroos en het Meisje in Rotterdam is not left out
At the Sailor and the Girl you eat 'Table d'hôtes', also known as 'the potluck'. Believe us, that pot is delicious and it saves you from having to worry about choosing. You only choose the number of courses: four or five. And whether you would like a wine arrangement (spoiler: you want that). This handsome business in Rotterdam has a fantastic location on Deliplein (a hidden gem of the city). You can easily arrive at the neighbors of Hotel New York by water taxi. Once inside Matroos, the interior is somewhat hysterical, full of checkered red tablecloths and Delft blue murals. But that cheesiness is precisely what makes the place so charming and let's just say that the food is anything but cheesy. We passed by and would prefer not to take a boat back.
In Rotterdam they can do quite a bit and at Matroos they are certainly not lagging behind. The wine list is small but nice, where we tasted wines like never before (read: syrup wine, tastes as special as it sounds). The natural wines and orange wines were alternated with wines from classic grapes from well-known regions. Wine alternates with cider and natural red vermouth. The food is clever (read: butter in flower form), original and the perfect portion size. The service is hospitable and knows how to maintain an informal atmosphere, while knowledge about the wines and dishes is shared without any problem.
Where it started? The fantastic sourdough bread from the local sourdough bakery 'Das Brot', with two types of butter (no, not just any butter): one made from goat's milk and the other from cow's milk with seaweed. No bread plates at Matroos, but nice crumbles on the tablecloth. This is followed by five dishes (with matching unique wines) that left our mouths open again and again. We don't want to reveal everything, but we ate (perhaps) the tastiest pasta ever here, with a pistachio sauce. Furthermore, this is a treat for vegetarians, fish eaters and meat eaters.
