Holy moly: DeZusters restaurant at Buitenplaats Doornburgh in Maarssen

On the edge of Maarssen you will find Buitenplaats Doornburgh. A special place for lovers of art, science, architecture, history and food. In fact, everyone will get their money's worth here. Whether you come to visit the changing art exhibitions, to have a meeting, or to have a meal restaurant DeZusters in the old monastery. When you walk through the large entrance gates of the site, you go back in time. When you take a seat at DeZusters, it feels as if a sister could join you at the table at any moment. Holy molyFor this reason alone, Buitenplaats Doornburgh is definitely worth a visit (at least).

Country estate Doornburgh

Buitenplaats Doornburgh has been around since 1623 and you immediately feel that when you walk onto the grounds. It's like being sucked back in time. The old Hoofdhuis used to serve as a summer residence for wealthy Amsterdam families. At the end of the 19th century, a monastic order moved into the estate and a monastery complex was built next to the Main House. The last sisters left the building in 2017 and the country estate has been open to the public since 2018. So you no longer have to be rich or celibate (luckily!) to experience the atmosphere. Although those sisters all lived to be very old... but what was the reason for that? Let's keep it in the beautiful location. The Buitenplaats is located in the middle of a park on the edge of Maarssen. That park is no less than 9 hectares in size, which provided more than enough space for a vegetable garden, courtyard and sculpture garden. Lots of beautiful things and all just a fifteen minute drive from Utrecht.

The Sisters

The Sisters

Nowadays, the country estate organizes residencies, exhibitions, workshops and lectures at the intersection of art and science. In addition, various rooms are rented for meetings and you will find a restaurant in the former dining room of the nuns The Sisters. From the outside it looks somewhat austere, but appearances can be deceiving. There is an authentic atmosphere inside. High ceilings, wide wooden tables with white linen and a stone floor with a cross. That cross is also reflected in the water bottles on the table. The super friendly staff, colored plants, wall hangings and art on the walls contribute to the homely feeling. Hanging above the kitchenheaven' in neon. Sacred with a big wink.

The menu changes and depends on the seasons. Many ingredients come from our own soil and we are working towards a circular kitchen where everything on your plate comes from our own grounds. At the time of writing, the menu includes pâté en croûte with vegetable garden piccalilli, mushroom ravioli, and salad with chestnut cream and pickled blackcurrant. Followed by a cheese fondue with brioche and homemade compote. Go ahead. While for many Sundays are all about rest and preparation for a new week, the DeZusters staff works hard so that guests can sit down for an extensive, surprising Sunday lunch consisting of several courses. Honestly, we will share everything, because lunch consists of dishes that you share. The drinks menu with a variety of good wines and lemonades is also certainly not bad.
