From orphanage to 'everything': the monumental Stadsherberg in Venlo
With a history dating back to the Middle Ages, this national monument has already had many functions. Then we are talking about the monumental City hostel in Venlo. From hospital to orphanage and then completely renovated and restored. Reopened November 2022 and returned to its full glory. What can we say: even better than its former glory. Now we hear you thinking: what if? Well. Let's put it this way: from breakfast to a bed, you can go here for everything. As they describe it themselves: 'the place where you are always welcome – your own home from home – a place where you can study, work, discover and relax'. Where is here? In order not to reveal everything at once - it's quite a lot, all those different functions - we'll start at the right beginning. Anyone who crosses the threshold at the Stadsherberg immediately feels those old atmospheres. The building breathes hundreds of years old. Not surprising, with all that history. A fusion of age-old elements - such as the stained glass, the old tiles (love it!) – combined with new ones. Thank goodness that those old elements have been preserved. Because that contrast works like a charm here at the Stadsherberg. The name Stadsherberg obviously refers to an inn where you can spend the night. Not your dime a dozen place. Mega (really!) budget-proof overnight stay – in one tiny room –, which is very welcome during this expensive days, is what you get. For two to four people per room. Oh and you sleep in a centuries-old monumental building, did we mention that yet?
However, the city inn does not only work well as an inn: the kitchen is also impressive. This includes cooked beef with a crispy crust and smoky center - which is cooked in the charming courtyard for no less than 16 hours. roasted – on the map. Uncomplicated tasty food, with a special beer. Not too difficult. Comfortable, informal.
