Must @ New York: Hoxton Williamsburg in Brooklyn

And the first branch of the Hoxton club (the Hox-ers and Hoxtonnetes) on the other side of the lake is exactly what we hoped for and a little more. Because 1) that location is spot on, but we already knew that. And 2) the hotel's catering industry has exactly that 'for any time of the day' + 'everyone welcome, everyone at home' atmosphere (but we also knew that already) and 3) there is an amazing roof terrace. Look, we didn't see that coming.

The Hoxton Williamsburg

The Hoxton Williamsburg

97 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY is the address. Indeed, in Williamsburg Brooklyn New York. Diagonally opposite the hotel named after the street and one of the pioneers in the area, it is highly overrated The Wythe Hotel (hysterically busy, expensive and noisy, nice for a lunch by the way, but sleeping? No, never again). And around the corner from my favorite Williamsburg hangout Café Colette (always good, remember that).

Good news on many fronts, also because until now you could only sleep comfortably at a number of AirBnB addresses in Williamsburg. Ain't no more: you can book a night at The Hox from around 200 euros per room per night. And that's what you call ringside for a dime in a city like New York. Literally (ergo the location). Well, I guess you're in now. That's great because then the fun begins. The welcome is as you would expect from the locations in Amsterdam, London and Paris: very warm but down to earth. In the European style, relief after all the exaggeration ge-haaaiiiiii en Sooooo great to have you.

No, at The Hox we just act normal. Friendly but normal. That's what the vibe is like: self-employed people are sitting on their laptop, someone else is reading a book, groups of friends are catching up and the staff are having a chat here and there while the pancakes and pastas are being carried back and forth. Tasty.

About those pancakes and pastas: the former are part of breakfast. You can eat them in the lobby (the room with the fireplace, the pastel-coloured armchairs and where the daylight streams in through the skylight) or in the restaurant behind the gigantic bar. But do the former – it's fun. Because in the restaurant you will sit down in the evening for a plate of good pasta, a beer and a glass of wine. Take a good look at the menu for the latter: here too, you will get a much too large glass of chardonnay if you are not careful, but there is also a good vionier, and half a glass is more than enough. Even tastier.

If you can, and if they are still there, try to reserve one of the three plastic domes for dinner that are set up downstairs (on the minus 1 floor, below street level). A bit crazy and eye-catching on the outside, perfectly romantic on the inside.

Although the real highlight of The Hoxton Williamsburg is the roof terrace: perfect views over the Manhattan skyline and a beautiful bar (with only beautiful people around). Of course the weather has to be a bit bad, but that will happen automatically.

see you again soon Hoxton Williamsburg – we'll be back!
