One of the finest bases in Curacao: Jan Kok Lodges Curacao

Should we to declare one island the favorite, then it is Curaçao. The largest of the bunch, with the bustling capital Willemstad as beating heart. Choosing a place to stay is not head-breaker: without a doubt Jan Kok Lodges Curacao, a green oasis in the middle the holiday island.

If we want to book a hotel, resort, Airbnb, or any other place to stay, we first want to know where to find such a spot. Because: location, location, location. You get the idea. In the case of Jan Kok Lodges Curaçao, that is absolutely taken care of. Jan Kok Lodges, as you will see, functions as a green (so green!) oasis on the island, which is dry in places (because of the sun all year long). Through the gate, out of the car, close the gate, and you know: this is going to be a relaxing vacation. It is also conveniently centrally located on beautiful Bandabou, where it is quiet and not so touristy. The island's most beautiful beaches, such as Porto Marie, Daaibooibaai, and Cas Abou, are just a few minutes' drive from Jan Kok.

Tip: download maps.me before departure, while you still have Wi-Fi. On Curaçao, that app works flawlessly.

You will stay in one of the studios, apartments, or lodges at the resort—eleven in total, ranging from studios for two and spacious apartments to complete family casitas. The best part: all the lodges were built and expanded by hand by the Dutch owners, Frederieke and Jeroen. They have been on the island for fifteen years now, and Jan Kok Lodges is a firm favorite for loyal travelers. What sets this place apart from a large hotel is precisely that personal touch. You are not just a room number, but a guest of people who think along with you. And because the resort is laid out so spaciously, right in the middle of nature, every lodge offers plenty of peace and privacy, making it ideal for those who want to stay here not for three days (though that is possible too), but for three weeks or longer.

Frederieke and Jeroen transformed a once-abandoned spot into the green oasis it is today. Rough wooden doors, black handles, space-saving sliding doors. Nothing else is missing: a fully equipped kitchen (a number of studios even have their own outdoor kitchen), lovely bathrooms, some with a bathtub, and shady verandas with lounge sofas full of soft cushions. Large wooden dining tables, a private BBQ, good crockery, wicker baskets, firewood, and colorful pots. You will find several outdoor showers in the garden. Bringing the kids along? High chairs and beds are ready. Breakfast is not provided; you make that yourself, although Frederieke is happy to help with local shopping tips. Naturally, air conditioning and fast Wi-Fi are also included.

Because every accommodation is a private home, it feels just like living in a small village: in the morning, you greet your neighbors on their own verandas on your way to your morning dip in the paradisiacal pool, lined with sun loungers. Along the way, you pass the outdoor bar and a library full of books, some left behind by previous guests, so you naturally read something different for a change. The bar isn't stocked, but it is perfect for those who bring their own food and want to spend the evening right outside the door.

Do head out—and you have to, because there is an island to explore—but first stop by Frederieke and Jeroen. They not only know the island like the back of their hand, but they also have good taste. They tipped us off about numerous nice little shops (more on that soon) and turned up their noses at the mediocre places. Separating the wheat from the chaff, in other words.

By the way, flamingos live around the corner from Jan Kok Lodges—you can't miss them! And thanks to the central location, nothing is ever far away. Be sure to make a note of this. Character, a more than successful restaurant by the water (also a tip: Sushi Saturday at the rooftop bar), just a stone's throw away. Chances are you will dine here more than once.
