Dream hotel on Bonaire: Harbor Village Bonaire

Some places feel as if they have always been there. Not contrived, but simply grown that way, in exactly the right place at the right time. That is precisely the feeling and the case at Harbor Village Beach ClubNot a standard hotel, but a hidden, yellow-painted village by the sea: quiet, green, and with that rare feeling that everything is just right even before you’ve taken off your flip-flops and are wriggling your toes through the sand.

Harbour Village and Bonaire are merging, after all way backAbout 40 years ago, the Owner bought this beautiful piece of land on the clear blue waters of Bonaire to create something unique. Initially for his family (and besides relaxing, they still actively manage the hotel), a private piece of paradise, which soon blossomed into something bigger. His vision? To create an oasis where people can truly feel at home, in a tropical location. A place that feels like a “home away from home".

For well over forty (!) years, the hotel has been doing what it does in this fabulous spot on Bonaire. Without ever compromising on luxury or service, and that is precisely why its success continues to grow.

Location, location, location – spot-onYou could say: you can never really go wrong on Bonaire. It is a small island, after all. And honestly? There is little to argue with that. But still, Harbour Village has just that little edge. A gem of a spot, if they ask us. Right in the middle of the island, on the west side (hello sunset), a stone's throw from Kralendijk, tucked away on a peninsula with – you guessed it – the island's only private beach right on the doorstep. And as if that weren't enough, you have a view of Klein Bonaire. Moreover, from the hotel's small harbor – and yes, 'Harbour' Village is absolutely accurate here – you are out on the water in no time. And if you happen to have one of those days where everything goes right, you might even spot dolphins. Your turn.

You can organize your entire trip through Booking.com: from booking accommodations and flights to arranging car rentals, airport taxis, and attractions. You can even arrange your crossing from Bonaire to Curaçao or Aruba through Booking.com.

Besides the location, there is also exclusivity. And you notice this right from the moment you arrive: you reach a gate where someone already knows your name before you even step out. This means that, without name recognition, the friendly but strict yet fair gatekeeper will call a halt to you. Only hotel guests are granted access here. Private, then. But, suppose you are not staying at Harbour, and you think: never mind, that isn't (entirely) necessary. On lucky days You stand a chance to win a day pass (if occupancy permits; in principle, attention is allocated to hotel guests). And should you manage to get your hands on this coveted day pass, it means: loafing around at a luxurious level. All day long. You can also have lunch and dinner in the restaurant even if you are not a hotel guest. Just be sure to make a reservation, as that same gatekeeper meticulously keeps track of the guest list.

Once through that gate, you walk over the cobblestones through the beautifully maintained village. The green grounds are so well cared for and regularly watered that they remain remarkably lush, especially on an island that isn't exactly blessed with abundant rain. Scattered across the spacious grounds are the low, yellow-painted buildings with picturesque rooms and suites (read: suites where we could easily live full-time), all within walking distance of the beach. In the evening, it gets pitch black here and warm lights come on everywhere. A walk along the beach towards the boat restaurant La Balandra is truly magical and downright romantic at that time.

You dine here in the 'washed-up' boat on the beach, named La Balandra. From the outside, it looks like a dark, colonial ship; inside, it is light, warm, and surprisingly cozy. You step inside via a small staircase and immediately run into the round bar, the kind of place where you unknowingly end up lingering all evening.

At the bow of the boat, the tables are set up in a charming and private setting. And that is exactly the spot at La Balandra where you can also catch the most beautiful sunset on the island. Be sure to ask about the catch of the day and let your dinner choice complement that perfectly. For lunch, start with a crackling glass of white wine and a club sandwich that is truly damn good. And as soon as evening falls? Naturally, a cocktail is the perfect accompaniment. If you want to take a truly romantic approach, you can also opt for dinner on the beach. Light the torches, put your feet in the sand, and listen to the sea in the background.

Boredom is simply not an option here. The beach is already waiting right outside your door, with sunbeds in the sand and hammocks in the palm trees. The suites are spacious, almost home-like in size, with a private terrace or small garden. Everything is designed to make life pause for a moment. And that is exactly what happens; you won't think about other places anymore. In short: you see a little less of the island, because you won't want to leave Harbour Village.

Although boredom is healthy, should you wish to do more than just lie around, the water is literally at your feet. Boat trips depart directly from the resort. It is not without reason that a large part of the resort is set up for this. On the edge of the grounds, you will find a dive center equipped for getting into the water: from gear to guidance. And so, you see your fellow hotel guests waddling off to the boat daily (where their divegear already ready for them) for the most beautiful diving experience.

We would almost forget that not only the resort, but Bonaire itself plays the leading role here. An island that feels as if it has never lost its tranquility. Friendly, manageable, and with an underwater world considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Thanks to the constant trade winds, it is pleasant here all year round, and it is precisely these winds that make the island popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. But it is equally a place to simply do nothing but read, eat, swim, and repeat.

And perhaps that is precisely the strength of Harbour Village Beach Club: it doesn't take you out of the island, but places you right in the middle of it.
