Before we continue with our camping guide, it might be a good idea to first provide some explanation about why we chose the Ardennes. The main reason is that it is close by, which is of course not unimportant for a weekend away, but it is also suitable for young and old. So you can walk there with the whole family or hike with a few friends who already have the necessary years of experience. It is also a wonderful place for the real cyclists among us. In short, the beautiful nature in combination with the many activities makes this area extremely popular.

Depending on your goal, where you sit in the Ardennes is of course very important. Nature is everywhere, but from one house or campsite it is easier to walk into the walking or cycling area. And if you are more looking for a terrace shopping holiday, then that cozy hut in the middle-of-nowhere not the right choice. If you also want to see something of Belgium itself, especially its history, it is advisable to choose a campsite or house closer to a city.

You don't go to the Ardennes to sit at home all day; you want to get going! Handy that you have something nice onion plant in advance. Walking through the forest, a challenging hike, an afternoon in the cave or visiting the castles of the Ardennes. If you provide your own shelter, you will of course need to bring the right tent. First of all, look for a tent that is large (or small) enough. Extra space for your stuff is useful, but if you're moving from place to place, you want a cute little tent, not one of those nonsense. An awning is not an unnecessary luxury, small or large: you can also enjoy a lot of rain in the Ardennes. Are you going in the autumn or winter months? Then get one too kerosene heater on, so that you are nice and warm in your tent. Even if you dress warmly, the chance that you will still be cold is quite high without a heater. The advantage of a kerosene heater is that they are portable and do not need to be connected to electricity or gas. Because a kerosene heater releases carbon monoxide, it is really important that you also take a carbon monoxide detector with you.

Camping in the Ardennes is of course a slightly different holiday than when you choose an all-inclusive week in Spain, and that also requires different preparation. If you take your time to find good accommodation, make a checklist for all your belongings and plan all activities, you will leave a lot more relaxed. On the other hand, the Ardennes are so close that it is also an ideal destination for a last minute weekend getaway. Whatever flows your boat!
