The story of the Lloyd Hotel begins in the 20s, when it was built by the shipping company Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd (what's in a name!). The building is located along the IJ bank on the edge of the center of Amsterdam, where the ships left for America and first served as a hotel for the emigrants. When Hollandsche Lloyd went bankrupt in 1935, the building was taken into use by the municipality of Amsterdam, after which it served, among other things, as a shelter for refugees, a prison and an artist's studio. Tip: in the stairwell you can view the entire history of the building!
The Lloyd Hotel is located on the IJ, in the Eastern Docklands, with the center a stone's throw away and upcoming Noord and bustling Oost nearby. Especially when you rent a bike in the lobby! If you come by train, you will be at Lloyd within fifteen minutes of the central station, and the hotel is also easily accessible by car. There is plenty of parking space in the underground parking garage. Very handy!
The iconic building that houses the Lloyd Hotel is an eclectic mix of architectural styles. It was designed by Evert Breman and has 117 completely unique rooms in all shapes and sizes. There is an option for every budget, from one to five stars! When booking, you only choose the room type and then be surprised by what the room looks like. Would you rather reserve a specific room? That's possible! You will then pay a small surcharge of 35 euros and of course you must take the availability into account.
Team Bart slept with Lloyd last week in room number 221, aka the classical music room. The room has no less than two (!!) floors and was designed by none other than Joep van Lieshout. eye catchers are the grand piano, large red spiral staircase and the gigantic bed that can easily accommodate seven (you read that correctly!) at the same time. The room contains a number of design classics, such as the '85 lamp chandelier' by Rody Graumans for Droog, which you can also admire in the MoMa in New York. Whether there are seven of you or not, this room already made it onto our list of the coolest hotel rooms we've ever stayed in.
In addition to being an icon of Dutch Design, the Lloyd hotel is also a wonderful place for a weekend in Amsterdam. There is a sunny terrace that you can take a boat to from the jetty behind the Lloyd Lighthouse Island and are the care products of Marie Stella Maris. You sleep in a room with a shared bathroom for an average of 75 euros per night. For a suite you pay around 200 euros.
