Know your preferences

Before you start looking for one new perfume, it is important to understand your own preferences. Ask yourself what scents normally attract you. Do you like fresh and light scents, or do you prefer richer and heavier aromas? Floral or not? Understanding your own taste will help you focus your search.

Understand the fragrance families

Understand the fragrance families

Perfumes are often classified into different fragrance families, such as floral, fruity, oriental and woody. Learning more about these fragrance families can help you better understand which scents appeal to you and which you want to avoid. Experiment with different scents within each family to discover which suits you best. If you find a scent too strong, you will not easily find a perfume that fits in the woody family. On the other hand: there are also all kinds of different degrees and intensity. Switch to a different fragrance family than you traditionally do to find a perfume in a different corner, maybe it fits better than you thought!

Visit a store and try it out

The best way to determine whether a perfume suits you is to test it on your skin (and not randomly spray it into the room). Spray a small amount onto your wrist or the inside of your elbow and then let it develop on your skin for a few hours. Perfume can smell different on different skin due to your body's unique chemistry, so it's important to test it on your own skin before making a purchase. What smells great for one person may not necessarily be the same for another.

Are you unsure about two different perfumes? Then ask for a sample of both fragrances. Then, before making the decision, you can try it at home at different times. This way you discover how the scents develop on your skin over a longer period. Then you can make an informed decision.
