Paris for those who look beyond the Eiffel Tower
Oui oui, Paris is always a good idea. But skip the crowded stairs at Montmartre and the endless line at the Eiffel Tower. This list is for people who want something a little different. For those who prefer to fill a weekend in Paris with hidden wine bars, roof terraces with a view, going out and eating among the locals. From funky places to stay to jazzy cellars and unexpected oases on the Seine. These are the very pretty places you won't find in every guidebook. Paris as you really want it.
Paris is full of great places to stay, but Mama Shelter East remains a favorite. Why? Because it's simply always is a good place to be. Think: a colorful mix of urban cool, vintage vibes and rock-'n-roll. The rooms are compact but cleverly decorated, the food is surprisingly good (pizzas! cocktails!) and the roof terrace is a big fat bonus, especially with sun. You are in the lively 20th arrondissement, so not right next to the Eiffel Tower, but that is exactly what makes it exciting. Here you feel the real Paris, with street art, small cafes. Très Mama, très leuk.
Don't feel like the hustle and bustle of the city centre? Then hop on board at Seine Club in the oh so nice Asnières. A suburb that you immediately want to write down for your next Paris trip. Here you don't just sail around the Seine, but you float along the banks where Monet and Van Gogh once painted their masterpieces. Think: soft light, green islands and old-fashioned charm. No guide with a microphone, but a relaxed atmosphere and a view that will make you silent. This is Paris, but different and that's exactly why it's so nice.
If you're smart, after the boat trip in Asnières-sur-Seine you can spend an afternoon at Bistrot Splash sit. Think: sun, feet (almost) in the water and a view over the Seine. It feels more Côte D'Azur than Paris here, with palm trees, a swimming pool (!), rattan chairs and a bistro menu where you want to try everything. Ceviche, burrata, bavette or côte de bœuf for two: everything is equally delicious. The atmosphere is laid back luxurious, the crowd stylish but not too stylish, and the wine list exactly what you would hope for. For those who want to escape the city without actually leaving Paris.
La Bellevilloise is one of those places you want to recommend, but secretly also want to keep for yourself. In the raw and cozy Belleville you will find this creative all-in-one spot. Think: restaurant, concert hall, rooftop and art space in one. Join us for a dinner between the olive trees with live music (yes, really), dance later in the basement for a French live set as if you have ended up in a movie, and end on the roof terrace with a view over the city. An evening at La Bellevilloise is never just an evening.
In the green Parc de la Villette, far from the tourist madness, you will find Cabaret Sauvage. A raw, velvet circus-like tent where everything is possible and happens. From world music to electronic beats, here you dance with locals between the red curtains and mirrors as if you have ended up in a movie. In the summer you have a drink on the terrace with a view of the Canal de l'Ourcq, it doesn't get any chiller. In short: an evening here is Paris at its coolest and most fun.
Generator Paris in the 10th arrondissement is exactly where affordability and style go high five. Whether you opt for a private room or score a bed in a shared dorm, you'll sleep in comfort here. The lounge has a relaxed vibe. And the roof terrace? It's your new favorite chill spot, with a view of Montmartre where you'll secretly feel like a Parisian. Throw a cocktail at the bar and check out the live DJs who regularly provide a party. Generator Paris: smart, stylish and cozy.
In the middle of the Bois de Vincennes, on an idyllic lake (yes, really), you will find Rosa Bonheur in the East. The little sister of the famous Parisian guinguettes. No honking or tourist fuss here, but whistling birds, cold rosé, and a dance as soon as the sun goes down. The wooden house (formerly Napoleon III's hunting lodge) and colorful tables with a picnic vibe. Perfect for a lazy afternoon that accidentally turns into a very nice evening. Paris, but then between the trees. Oui, oui, oui.
In the up and coming Pantin (just outside Paris, but with all the cool points) DOCK B: an old industrial building on the Canal de l'Ourcq that now serves as an all-in-one hangout for the creative crowd. Here you can have a chill lunch by the water, dance to live music or a great DJ set in the evening, and dive into an expo or mini concert in between. The atmosphere? Think Berlin meets Paris, with good wine, comfort food with a twist, and always something unexpected. Bonus points for the sunny terrace on the canal. DOCK B is one of those places where you linger for a while and maybe even the whole day.
In the raw Pantin, right next to the Parc de la Villette, lies MIA MAO. A new club that is making the Parisian nightlife scene shine. With no less than 3000 m² in a former industrial warehouse, you immediately feel like you are in a Berlin techno cathedral. With an impressive sound system and mega lighting installations, this is the place for an evening of dancing. And with a strict “no photo” policy, you can fully surrender to the experience. MIA MAO is the new hotspot for those who love deep bass, dark beats and an energetic atmosphere.
