Swimming with humpback whales

Swimming with humpback whales

If you French Polynesia visit between August and October (or secretly just plan your trip around it), then you have a chance at something very special: swimming with humpback whalesYou know – those impressive giants you see on social media launching completely out of the water or slamming their tails onto the water with a splash. Goosebumps and an open mouth guaranteed. This is one of the few places in the world where you can actually meet them up close in the water, under strict rules. Exciting? Yes. Unforgettable? Go eat at summer pop-up restaurant Erloom in Hilvarenbeek

Go eat at summer pop-up restaurant Erloom in Hilvarenbeek

New week, new chef. That is how simple the concept of Erloom is: the go-to summer pop-up restaurant in Hilvarenbeek. Yup, that place where Beekse Bergen is located. All summer long, from early May to the end of September, the owners set up shop here with restaurant Erloom. Every weekend is a party, and a different chef stands behind the open fire. Sometimes local, sometimes flown in from the other side of the world (yes, really). This all-in experience Should not be missing from your bucket list.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro

Large parts of the Netherlands are already celebrating Carnival. And the other parts of the Netherlands move en masse to the south (or east) of our country as soon as the party (literally and figuratively) begins. Carnival in Brazil is a whole different story, though. But definitely an absolute one. black For your bucket list. The parades are gigantic and breathtaking, the costumes are incredibly colorful, the music is so swinging that you can't stand still, and those Brazilian hips know exactly how to dance to it – Dutch hips, on the other hand, might need some practice.

Please be aware: Carnival in Brazil is also the best week of the year for pickpockets. You wouldn't be the first, and certainly not the last, tourist to leave home with a substantial amount of belongings (wallet, phone, camera, jewelry, etc.) and return empty-handed. It is therefore often recommended to leave as much as possible in your hotel (yes, even your beloved mobile phone) or to store everything really securely. And also practical: prices in Rio de Janeiro skyrocket during Carnival. So book on time and make sure you arrange your reservations and payments well in advance. If you have a credit card with the Dutch company ICS, you can reach ICS 24/7 for loss or theft. That is a reassuring thought when you are heading into the chaos of Carnival in Rio.

Brazil is, of course, much more than just Carnival and Rio de Janeiro. Should you fly that way, it is absolutely worth exploring more of this gigantic country. Paraty (a lovely city with beautiful nature) and Ilha Grande (an island with delightful beaches and plenty of peace and quiet), for example, are located very close to Rio – by Brazilian standards, that is; we Dutch people already consider the distance from Groningen to Maastricht to be far.

Sleep right next to bears at Paira Daiza

Sleep right next to bears at Paira Daiza

A day at Pairi Daiza – one of the most beautiful zoos in Europe – is already a treat. But you can also sleep right next to the animals, and that is a truly special experience. And not with a wall in between. No, behind a gigantic window so you can see everything up close day and night, without having to squeeze through the crowds. During such an overnight stay, you are also allowed into the park an hour earlier, breakfast and dinner are included, and if you reserve a spot, you can also use the spa for 1,5 hours for free. It might be a small detour to Brugelette in Belgium, but it is certainly worth the drive, with or without children.

Around Australia (The Lap)

Around Australia (The Lap)

Australia is big. Very big. The ultimate way to really discover the country? The Lap: a roadtrip Past all the iconic highlights, from the golden beaches and the Sydney Opera House to the vast Outback and Uluru, from the Great Ocean Road to the rugged coasts of Western Australia. Simply the whole country in one adventure. Count on at least six months for the entire round trip. Some travelers even take a year. Not that much time? No problem. Visiting one of the beautiful regions in a few weeks is just as magical. The best way to travel is with your own car or campervan: plenty of freedom, many cheap or free campsites, and the ultimate roadtrip-feeling. Public transport, on the other hand, is usually not an option outside the Greyhounds bus on the east coast. The distances between the cities are simply too great. Oh right, and before you ask… No, not everything is deadly in Australia. People like to exaggerate.

More cool roadtrips? Look here once.

Did you know that you can't pay everywhere in Australia with your debit card either? A credit card is a must, especially for renting a campervan or other trips.

Swimming with orcas

Swimming with orcas

In Norway, another true bucket-list experience awaits: swimming with orcas. Isn't that dangerous? No, miraculously not. The orca may be the king of the sea, but they have never attacked humans in the wild. Being able to see such intelligent creatures up close and in their natural habitat is truly special. The water is really cold, though, and the orcas are only there during the coldest months (October through January). That does save you an ice bath (also a popular experience in Norway). You also often see other mammals, such as humpback whales, and there is a chance you can immediately cross the Northern Lights off your list as well. One big bucket-list party.

Dining at De Librije, Zwolle

Dining at De Librije, Zwolle

The Libre is the culinary icon of the Netherlands and a black for your foodie bucket list. The only three-Michelin-star restaurant in the Netherlands serves innovative dishes in which taste, technique, and presentation are perfectly combined. The location, in a historic library, makes the atmosphere just as special as the food. The stars in the kitchen use local ingredients to tell a story with every dish (yes, it sounds a bit crazy 'having a story told', but that is part of the experience at a Michelin-starred restaurant). Whether you are a seasoned gourmet or normally do not frequent Michelin restaurants: a dinner at De Librije is an experience you won't soon forget. Ate your fill or had just a little too much wine? Then you can crawl upstairs and enjoy a wonderful night's sleep in the Librije Hotel for the full library experience.

Seeing both the Northern and Southern Lights

Seeing both the Northern and Southern Lights

The Northern Lights are probably already high on your bucket list (or perhaps you have seen them before). The best places? Lapland, Iceland, Canada, Greenland, and Alaska. Although sometimes we even get lucky in the Netherlands, especially on the Wadden Islands. Tip: find a place where it is really dark. And funnily enough, your phone often sees it better than you do… Unfortunate, but true! With the 'My Aurora Forecast' app, you won't be sitting tensely staring into the cold all evening, but will get notifications when you need to run outside.

But wait, there is more: the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis). It looks exactly like the Northern Lights, but in the south of the Earth. The ultimate spots? New Zealand, Antarctica, and Patagonia (Chile). Because it is winter there while we are in summer, your chances are even higher during your summer vacation. Bonus: these destinations are all epic bucket list spots.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sights in the world. This ancient Inca city is located high in the mountains of Peru, surrounded by misty valleys and green peaks. It is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world and is on many travelers' bucket lists.

The best way to reach Machu Picchu is via the famous Inca Trail, a four-day trek through the mountains past many beautiful spots. It is a tough hike, but ultimately it is more than worth it. When you see the view of the lost city of the Incas, you know why you did it, and you would certainly do it again in a heartbeat.

Moon-like valleys, geysers, and starry skies that leave you speechless. With these three countries, one bucket list moment isn't even over before the next one appears.

You use a debit card daily, but during a trip you notice that a credit card offers just that extra convenience and security: worldwide acceptance at hotels, restaurants, and rentals, handy for reservations, deposits, and purchase protection so that almost all your purchases are insured against loss, theft, and damage for 180 days. With an ICS Gold or Platinum Card, that is even 365 days.

Test your limits: run a marathon

Test your limits: run a marathon

Someday I am going to learn to dive, skydive, the Mount Everest “Climb, run a marathon”… you know the ones: all those (good) resolutions. But the older you get, the less freedom you often have. And let’s be honest: you probably won’t just run a marathon at 60, let alone Mount Everest. So it’s time to stop putting that bucket list off and just go for it.

Getting there is quite a challenge. You fly to Indonesia (Java, Bali, or Sulawesi), fly on to Sorong (another good four hours), take a two-hour ferry, and then another small boat of at least half an hour (homestay dependent). Another – and much more famous – awesome festival is SongkranThe festival is intended to celebrate the Thai New Year (the beginning of the solar calendar year).
