These are the emerging travel trends for 2024

Yes, the oliebollen are in the stomach and the fireworks have been shot into the air: on to a fresh new year. And then come those tiring (sorry, not sorry) good intentions. To be honest, we prefer to skip the question of what we want to change this year. A topic we much prefer to talk about during the New Year's reception is holidays, because a new year means making new holiday plans. Because where are we going this year? And how are we going to travel?

Booking.com has mapped out the travel trends of Dutch people for 2024 through their annual research. Discover the seven trends that show how we will travel next year, including the popular destinations.

Surprise trips

Surprise trips

The new motto is as follows: 'we will see where the ship ends up on holiday in 2024'. As Dutch people, we are no longer so fond of our control when it comes to holidays and want to be surprised more and more. Delicious Calm.

A surprise trip is extremely popular and preferably one where everything is a surprise, including the destination. Then we are not referring to a holiday with the standard tourist outings, because we are also ready with a holiday that is a dime a dozen.

Back to yourself

Back to yourself

Back to yourself... It sounds a bit vague, but when it comes to holidays it is indeed true. Just under half of Dutch people enjoy the opportunity to get to know themselves in a different way on holiday and more than half of travelers believe that they are the best version of themselves during their holiday. 1 + 1 = 2 and then you discover new aspects of your personality.

Then the alter ego also comes into play, because a large proportion of Dutch people rent a nicer car on holiday than they have at home.

into the cold

The roles have been reversed: we used to go on holiday for the heat, but now we go on holiday to avoid the Dutch heat. More than a third of Dutch travelers believe that rising temperatures in the Netherlands and climate change will play a role in booking a holiday in 2024.

Go out into the cold and go to the water, because almost two-thirds of Dutch travelers feel more relaxed when they are close to the water. And then comes the next trend: the growing popularity of mindfulness and meditation. Undoubtedly, developments such as wild swimming and the ice bath therapy movement will play a role.

How picky we are as Dutch people... When it comes to holidays, we appear to be quite adventurous when it comes to culinary matters. Almost half of Dutch travelers want to discover the local cuisine and traditional dishes of the country they are visiting.

Pasta in Italy, tacos in Mexico and pad Thai in Thailand, bring it on.

In our own country

In our own country

Unfortunately, but true: we feel inflation in our wallets. That is why in 2024, the Dutch will choose a destination where the cost of living is lower than at home or we will look for a holiday closer to home to keep costs low.

And we are willing to take some risks for that holiday: almost a third of Dutch travelers with children plan to take their children out of school in 2024 to travel outside the high season, so that it is cheaper.

Love

Love

B&B full of love was the TV hit of the past year and this search has inspired the Dutch traveler. Of Dutch single travelers, almost a quarter would like to make time for a dating holiday to meet a new partner or loved one. In addition, a quarter of Dutch people would choose a holiday to get over a relationship after heartbreak.

On the other hand, among couples, one in five sees deepening their bond with their partner as the top priority for traveling in 2024.

Eco holiday

Eco holiday

Hipper than ever: an eco holiday with the words sustainable and stylish in one sentence. So no primitive campsites, but a Glamping with comfort and a unique design.

There is a growth in hotels and other unique accommodations that prioritize sustainability with an increasing role for green spaces and plants in the accommodation. So on to a sustainable Glamping, lodge or other accommodation.
