Appetizers in an old prison: it is possible at Damianz in Roermond

We wrote about it before five-star hotel the Arresthuis, located in the former prison and located deep down south of our country, now about the restaurant that is housed here: Damianz. That's what this pearl of a restaurant deserves. Named after the penultimate bishop of the French era – it goes waaaay back, there at Damianz – the Imperial Count Damianus van Hoensbroek. Now Damianz has been completely given a contemporary look and you must (must!) join the to do.

However, chef Jeroen van Gansewinkel has been in charge here for several years now. And he can't be stopped. Happy. Damianz had been on the radar for some time and that turned out to be for good reason. Exceptionally good food in a beautiful place, where you can enjoy it from early in the morning until late in the evening. Eating out at Damianz turns out to be one big party. Just pull out your nice suit and... let's go.

Where is this former prison located? The heart of Roermond in the Pollartstraat. Rolling to the train from here is no problem. An exceptionally good dinner menu awaits you here. Or a lunch, because honestly: day drinking is also great. You can choose from a four to seven course menu (the more, the better is the motto) and you can also opt for the Chef's menu. This means that you have all signature dishes from chef Jeroen, such as oysters with foie royale raspberry and verveine & langoustine with asparagus (we are not in Limburg for nothing!) with lychee, dill and Tom kha kai. Nom! Ten points for the hint of Asian influences in the dishes. Which dishes are absolutely not to be missed? Honestly, we can't choose. Unaffectedly brilliant food. The presentation, the refined flavors, the nicest staff who refills your wine glass (yay!) and the fact that you can't stop looking around because everything is so beautiful. Think of velvet sofas, elegant chandeliers and marble tables – warm, with chic accents – and the raw edge of the former prison.

The fun part? Each menu contains at least one dish that refers to the old prison. That makes the stories about the dishes at the table even more special. Tip: have the appetizers served in the former air space - which now functions as a beautiful courtyard - with your face in the sun while enjoying a Limburg bubble.

In short: fine dining in a special setting where the level is always high is central here. Without it becoming too chic or too stiff. Top-quality food but with a Burgundian Limburg no-nonsense slant and sweet & friendly staff who are committed to giving you a great experience. For your bucket list, that Damianz.
