Before the workout

Before the workout

Change starts with yourself, blah-blah, we all know it, but supporting yourself isn't cheating, right? No, they said at Holland & Barrett. Besides the fact that healthy eating is of course number one (check out these recipes for healthy snacks), certain sports supplements can support you during exercise and thus help you lose weight. For example, you can use a Pre-workout take before exercising. That is a powder where, among other things caffeine, creatine, amino acids and various vitamins in it, which can help you with your energy levels, endurance and strength. Such a pre-workout is useful, for example, if you have another workout after a long day at work workout is going to do. We know caffeine, vitamins too, but... creatine… What's that? Creatine is a substance that occurs naturally in our body and is found in our food. It stimulates muscle growth during explosive strength training and is therefore often taken as a separate supplement before a workout by people who exercise intensively. The less avid athlete (read: exercising once a week at a moderate pace) will benefit less from creatine.

Proteins: the building blocks

Proteins: the building blocks

What the less fanatical athlete – or let's call it 'the weekly athlete', sounds better – can benefit from is egg white or protein. Protein supplies amino acids, which are the building blocks of our body and muscles. Everyone needs them, whether you exercise or not. They are found in animal products such as meat, fish and dairy, but certainly also in vegetable products such as legumes (beans and lentils), nuts, seeds and mushrooms, for example. A healthy adult needs 0,8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. So if you weigh 80 kilos, you need 0,8 x 80 = 64 grams of protein daily. When you exercise, your protein needs increase because your muscles have to work harder to recover and build new muscle mass. You may not be getting enough protein from your normal diet and you can take a supplement protein shake Take after exercise to support recovery and growth of muscle mass. It is best to consume such a shake within two hours workout take.

Which protein shake?

Which protein shake?

Holland & Barrett sells various types of protein shakes, containing proteins from cow's milk (whey protein and casein) but also proteins from non-animal sources. This plant-based protein shakes, where the proteins come from soy, pea, rice, hemp or a mix thereof, are becoming increasingly popular. If you want to lose some Christmas kilos, it is useful to choose a protein shake with as few carbohydrates and fats as possible and as much protein as possible. An additional advantage of proteins is that it makes you feel full, so you are less likely to be tempted to eat snackto loot drawer(s). Which type of protein is most suitable for you depends on your goal, preferences and budget. You can get advice about this in one of the Holland & Barrett stores or schedule an appointment online free telephone or video consultation, where you can ask all your questions.

Recipe: pea protein smoothie

You make a protein shake by mixing the protein powder with (vegetable) milk or water. You can also add it to your yogurt or cottage cheese or mix it into a smoothie. To be fair, proteins have a certain taste that is not always tasty. It can feel a bit 'dry' or grainy in your mouth and that is why flavors are often added. It is mainly a matter of testing out how you like your shake best. To give you some inspiration, we have a recipe for a protein shake made from protein powder with fruit and spinach.

Ingredients:

▪️ 1 banana
▪️ 1 scoop of vegetable (pea) protein
▪️ 2 tsp chia seeds
▪️ 1 scoop beetroot powder
▪️ 200 ml (vegetable) drink, for example almond milk
▪️ handful of spinach

Preparation method:

Combine the ingredients in the blender, mix into a smoothie and drink it after your workout. Easy does it! Not a fan of a protein shake or would you prefer a ready-made protein shake? Then one would protein bar could also be an option.

Magnesium

Magnesium

Oh yes, it can also be useful to make sure there is enough magnesium. This is a mineral that is mainly found in bread, vegetables, dairy products and meat and it can be purchased as magnesium supplement. It plays a role in maintaining flexible and strong muscles and can contribute to less fatigue. It is best to take a magnesium supplement around a meal.

Let's get everything straight

Let's get everything straight

Do you still have it all sorted out? No? Not bad. Here is a brief summary of which products and nutrients can help you if you have: sportspirit picks up again and wants some support.

  • Create a Pre-workout before exercising: for your energy level, endurance and strength. Two cups of strong coffee for the caffeine is also possible, but then you will miss the creatine, amino acids and various vitamins that have been added to a pre-workout.
  • Protein: for recovery and muscle building. A protein shake or protein bar after exercise can be a good and easy way to get extra protein and it makes you feel full.
  • Magnesium: plays a role in maintaining flexible and strong muscles and can contribute to less fatigue.

A nutritional supplement can be used to supplement and not replace a healthy and varied diet.
