Five tips for autumn in South Tyrol
Red, yellow and orange: the colors of autumn in South Tyrol (Südtirol). Just after summer, but still want to get away from it all? Then you will love South Tyrol. Take it from us. There are plenty of walks along beautiful views to get that holiday feeling back. There are also during autumn in South Tyrol plenty of other things to experience. From cozy traditions to lots of wine. Nothing is too crazy in South Tyrol!
If you ask a South Tyrolean how many seasons there are in a year, you will get a surprising answer: five. When the grapes have been harvested and the vine leaves turn golden yellow, it starts in South Tyrol Törggele season. The farm cafés will open their cozy homes from October to November 2023. This is organized in the area where the wine and chestnuts were harvested. The delicious food and perfect wine are combined with “Siaße” (grape must).
There is even one for real hiking enthusiasts chestnut route of up to 90 kilometers. This beautiful walk goes past the Neustift monastery near Brixen and via the slopes of the Eisacktal, then through the high Ritten and through the Bolzano valley, to Terlan/Terlano and Vilpain/Vilpiano. Along this route you can also buy fresh farm products directly from the producer and they promise to be heavenly.

You can follow this on foot, by bike or even by car. You will pass super nice local things such as castles, charming villages, wine farms and old buildings. You are even surrounded by… vineyards!
From October 20 to November 5, 2023, this route is extra special, because the tastiest wine is combined with local and international music. That means jamming along with a delicious wine in your hand. These concerts are mapped out along the side of the route. Experience this unique experience now for just ten euros.

Those who absolutely love game dishes should not miss autumn in Eggental. There is even, for the vegetarians among us, an abundance of fresh fruit, berries, herbs and mushrooms. These can be used for variations of the game dishes (so fortunately nothing has to be wasted). During the last two weeks of September, something special happens again in South Tyrol (versatile there, eh?). During these two weeks, four mountain huts are linked to a local farm. Then there will be put together a menu with that producer that can be tasted on a given day. What is also nice to know is that you can even meet the producer to learn more about the special features and properties of the products.
We have an example of a dish on the menu so you can get a better idea: Tortellini filled with ricotta and wild herbs with lemon sauce and mint. If this dish doesn't make you swoon, then this dish will: crispy pork belly, pumpkin mustard, shallot fondant with South Tyrolean wine vinegar.
Many people have to look twice when they see this special sheep. It looks as if the sheep is wearing glasses. Hence the name: spectacled sheep. The sheep have characteristic dark pigmentation around their eyes, which makes it appear that way. These sheep belong to the oldest sheep breed in South Tyrol. That is why the Gastronomic weeks organized in October. Various activities are organized here. You can even attend an excursion where you will learn about the traditions of the mountain farmers and the various products of local agriculture that come with them. A family day is also organised, where you will learn how to process the wool from the spectacled sheep.
