Barts Best of: Sud Tirol (or South Tyrol, that's also possible)

South Tyrol? Sud Tyrol? South Tyrol? Where is that again? Italy! Yeah, that's surprising, isn't it? At least, when you, know, you know, but if not, then, uh, not. But South Tyrol is indeed Italy and that means that you can - indeed - enjoy delicious food there. To be precise, it is the northernmost autonomous province of Italy. You will find part of the Dolomites (mountains! snow!), German is (also) spoken (jawohl) and the capital is the (very nice) Bozen (or Bolzano in Italian, always sounds better). Where should you go? We know: here comes Barts Best of: Sud Tirol (or South Tyrol, that's also possible).

En route through beautiful Sud Tyrol

En route through beautiful Sud Tyrol

We just think it is, with a dot the best kept secret of Italy. In the very northern province in the middle of the Italian Dolomites you will find: South Tyrol/South Tyrol. With up to 300 days (!) of sunshine, it is a textbook holiday for most of the year. There is a fantastic alpine culture, insanely good cuisine (after all: hello Italy) and (of course) a dazzling landscape. A perfect area for a solid road trip so you don't miss anything. Bonus: in addition to the unique gastronomy (you will find a total of twenty star restaurants!), it is also the perfect place to spend time with your family. You get it: Northern Italy is not just for winter sports: it is for next summer. Summer? Sure! Just read: en route through beautiful Sud Tirol, past vineyards, via the best restaurants and doing nothing with a view of the mountains.

Villa Arnica Lana South Tyrol

Villa Arnica Lana South Tyrol

Villa Arnica – Another beautiful place in the heart of Lana, but this time without it kidsAdults only Villa Arnica is surrounded by apple trees, palm trees and mountains. The building was built in 1925 and is tranquil on the inside. Read: an orchestra of whistling birds in the garden all day long. With a sustainable garden to table concept, you eat fresh fruits and vegetables all day long. They actually serve a little bit of everything here: freshly baked, freshly picked and freshly grilled. The garden with swimming pool looks like one from a movie that you watch and Instantly he thinks: I have to go here! At Villa Arnica you can choose from four room types, all equally dreamy and modern. Read: white tiled bathrooms, beautiful corners and classic wood. Just as nice: almost all hotspots can be reached on foot or by bike (we like). Villa Arnica

Lüsen: Familyhotel Sonnwies + Hotel Lüsnerhof

Lüsen: Familyhotel Sonnwies + Hotel Lüsnerhof

Family hotel Sonnwies in South Tyrol, in the small mountain village of Lüsen, is truly a paradise for children and parents. The surroundings are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful (all year round, but especially when there is a lot of snow), the hotel itself is equally beautiful and comfortable with just the right dose of luxury. 10 points? 10 points. Read more: Family Hotel Sonnwies

The hotel neighborhood with an equally beautiful hotel. Kids are also welcome here, but the hotel is less responsive to this. Nature hotel Lüsnerhof is the name. Upon arrival you would think you have ended up in a winter fairytale. This beautiful chalet Slash hotel is located in the Lüsen valley, where you have a great (panoramic) view. Winelands? In South Tyrol? Well, and how! Are you staying in Lusen, or at Forestis (do it, read more about dream hotel Forestis), then you are close to the very nice historic town of Bixen. And close to a whole host of fantastic wine estates. We call:

  • Pacherhof
  • Strasserhof Weingut – Tenuta
  • Kloster Neustift
  • Weingut Köfererhof

These four are close to each other. If you have to choose one, do Kloster Neustift! A real outing, we thought, with beautiful centuries-old buildings, a walk through them (and through the greenery around the monastery) and cozy eateries (plural, yes). Oh, and please take home a bottle of Riesling for us…

Tips for vineyards where the restaurants (with wine pairing) go):

  • Kuenhof – Pliger Peter
  • Sunnegg Ristorante + Appartamenti
  • Taschlerhof – Peter Wachtler

Cyprianerhof, Dolomites

Cyprianerhof, Dolomites

Enjoy skiing, delicious food, and unwind in the spa – sounds wonderful, doesn't it? So, you're probably wondering: where should I go? To Cyprianerhof, nestled in the heart of the Italian Dolomites at an altitude of 1200 meters. A beautiful five-star hotel with a price tag, but what you get in return is more than worth it. Everything here revolves around Cultura Dolomiti: good food, friendly people, and art. And after an active or relaxing day, you can sit down for a (delicious) dinner featuring fresh, local produce. As if it were meant to be, you can step right next to the hotel onto the ski lift, heading towards the Dolomiti Superski region with its twelve interconnected ski areas. Perfect for skiing and ice climbing in winter, and for beautiful hikes and mountain biking through the lush green landscape in summer. Looking for some peace and quiet? Yoga, forest bathing, saunas, and extensive wellness options await you in the spa.

Haller Suites & AO Restaurant

Haller Suites & AO Restaurant

Just a stone's throw from the town of Brixen, the Haller Suites and the associated AO Restaurant are a great recommendation. Especially to sit down alone for an extensive dinner or lunch (or both). Unlike many in the area, it is beautifully modern here (not that cold, not at all, but glass and heavy black lead doors everywhere). And then you might expect a closed-butt restaurant, matching the chic grandeur of the whole place. Wrong! On the menu plump portions made from honest ingredients from the neighborhood. The wines also come from the vines that you look down on from the restaurant. This is a tip, take it from us.

1477 Reichshalter

This boutique hotel is located in the center of Lana. And not just any boutique hotel, you can go there for a coffee or snack in the café on the ground floor, but the most beautiful is one of the eight rooms. The interior has been meticulously designed by interior stylist Christina von Berg. And yes, even the small shampoos and shower gels have been well thought out. These are all vegan and the scents are inspired by the mountains and nature of Tyrol. The beds (my lord, the beds) can best be compared to a kind of down cloud that you don't want to step out of. The menu in the restaurant is small, pure and refined. The wines are just as pure and come from South Tyrol and Trentino. 1477 Reichshalter

Brixens

Brixens

If possible, spend at least a (half)day in the village of Brixen, in Italian: Bressanone, a lovely little town where time has stood still, with the exception of a few truly hip businesses. Ha!

Set course for the corner of the shopping street Vinothek Vitis Enoteca. Here – of course – mainly local wines and a pleasant one vibe. You score extra ice cream, very large scoops Pupp Cafe Konditorei Eisdiele and for a sweet tooth Konditorei Klemens the place.

Staying (and joining us) in the city is absolutely possible: that's what it's for Old slaughterhouse your place. A contemporary, rather crazy hotel in an industrial building. That industrial feeling was (of course) continued inside and it turned out perfectly.

But whatever you do, go to Brix 0.1. A very nice pavilion in a large and beautiful park. Car-free of course. Kids play on a small beach and you can sit on the terrace for a very long time. By far the nicest place in Brixen.

My Arbor, wellness hotel, Brixen

My Arbor, wellness hotel, Brixen

You can stay here in a unique way! In a mega-deluxe tree house—oh sorry, hotel. But not just any hotel: on stilts 25 meters high, with amazing architecture and a spa of no less than 2500m². The rooms? Beautiful. And when you leave here, you have never been so zen. With 5 different saunas, 4 sauna infusions per day, an indoor and outdoor pool and endless chill spots, it couldn't be otherwise.

And what else is the ultimate holiday? Good food. Luckily, you're in the right place here. Including half board, so an extensive breakfast buffet (with à la carte options) and a 5-course dinner in the evening. There's a good chance you'll have to roll up... But don't worry, there's a lift. Wink.

Park Hotel Mondschein, Bolzano

Park Hotel Mondschein, Bolzano

This historic gem is located in the heart of the capital of South Tirl Bozen, aka Bolzano. Or well... Historical... The oldest part of this building dates from 1320 (yes, really old), but the whole place recently received a more than awesome upgrade and became exactly what we are looking for post-2022. The hotel likes to say that its aim is to help travelers relax, whether this is with an iced coffee in hand or with an ice-cold beer. Okay. Especially when it happens in such a beautiful setting. There are 72 rooms and 10 suites. And really, they are all a dream for the designer lover among us. The rooms have meter-high ceilings and modern finishes with dark wood. Whether you travel by train or by car, want a breakfast after an overnight stay or prefer to go into the city, everything is possible here. Park Hotel Mondschein

Casa tra cime, Livinallongo del col di lana

Casa tra cime, Livinallongo del col di lana

A beautiful old farmhouse from 1870 that has been transformed into a stylish family home in the middle of the Italian Dolomites, that is Casa tra cime.

The Italian Dolomites are always a good idea, both in the middle of winter and in the middle of summer and every period in between. You can check something off your bucket list when you stay here. In winter, for example, you can ski the famous Sella Ronda ski tour, take snow walks and ice skate on frozen mountain lakes. You can then tick off that bucket list in the summer: challenging hikes in the mountains and relaxing walks or cycling tours through the idyllic valleys. You should not miss the many picturesque mountain villages in the area. And what are we going to do in the mountain villages? Italian food of course! Lots and lots of very good food. The owners' favorite mountain huts in the area are: Rifugio Emilio Comici, Jimmi Hütte, Sofie Hüttebaita Daniel Hütte, Fienile Hütte and Val d'Anna Hütte.

Rasen-Antholz, Pustertal and surroundings

Rasen-Antholz, Pustertal and surroundings

We'll dive into it a little deeper Rasen-Antholz area and surroundings. A valley (Pustertal/Val Pusteria) at an altitude of 1.250m and between the Dolomites and the Alps: it is not surprising that it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. While you can enjoy skiing here in the winter, in the other seasons it is a paradise for anyone who also wants to see something of nature. There are lakes, beautiful mountain passes, waterfalls: hiking and cycling enthusiasts are in the right place here. Add to that the oh-so-good cuisine and you have your next holiday in mind.
