TOMATO MAASTRICHT

First the history of the Maastricht Koestraat in a very brief nutshell: twenty years ago you would not want to be found dead (or alive) in this medieval-looking street, now it is - in our opinion - the nicest street in Maastricht. The Koestraat is small and less than 100 meters long in total, but it feels like one petit avenue in Marsh. The oui, oui So a Parisian feeling. Thanks to the local catering establishments, who made the transformation possible. We find it hidden at the tail end of the Koestraat Tomato. An Italian shop, which is a nice addition in the middle of the street with French allure

Just like the rest of the Koe businesses Tomato small and therefore quickly full: tiny tables against the long blue wall bench (no velvet this time, for which kudos) alternated with higher tables. What immediately stands out is the large open kitchen, which always makes the place buzz with liveliness. The fresh yellow lemons, the one and a half liter bottles of San Pellegrino and the homemade limoncello shine towards you.

So Tomato is Italian, really Italian, although they are missing a crucial course on the menu. An Italian food list normally consists of anti pasti, primi and secondi, but the latter has been removed from the menu here. Which turns out to be a strategic masterstroke: it keeps the menu - anti pasti, pizzas and pastas - so nice and clear.

This clarity also applies to the anti pasti: just 3x meat and 3x cheese, what more could a hungry person want? The pastas are also extremely simple, and that is why they are so tasty. We were not able to taste the pizzas (truffle ravioli always wins), but given the continuous influx of pizza takeaway people, these must also be delicious.

Point of criticism: sitting dry - as in: glass empty while you would like a new vino - we don't like it. Anyway, let's blame that on the first warm spring day and the cozy terrace outside causing delays.
