Garden jobs in January and February – Mama Bart knows how and what

Although it is only the beginning of January, the itch can already start and the anticipation of the new garden season begins.

It is of course still far too early for most things, but there is already plenty to prepare and prepare for the coming season. Read about how to sow peas, which bloomers you can prepare now and which fruit plants you need to prune.

This way you can sow peas indoors. Sowing peas? Yes! Take a pack of whole peas from the supermarket. Place a layer of compost or garden soil in the bottom of a flat container. Place peas on top and cover with a layer of soil. Place the container in a sunny spot and water regularly. After a few weeks the peas will emerge. Cut them when they are about 10 cm high. You can eat it several times. Delicious on a sandwich, with a salad or a fresher stew.

If you want a bloomer in the garden this time of year, plant a Camellia. The newer varieties can withstand severe frost and they smell wonderful, especially if you place a branch inside the vase. Some new species are Yuletide; red flowering from December to February. Winter's Toughie blooms pink from November to January. Jerry Hill blooms lilac pink. Flowering stops during very severe frost, but in our current winters they are beautiful eye-catchers.

If you think the Camellia is too big and still want something flowering, consider the Helleboris. This low-growing plant comes in all kinds of colors. If you have had it in the garden for some time, check the plant for brown leaves. This often contains mold, which can affect the entire plant. Do not throw the rotten leaves on the compost heap (because then you will get nagging again).

You don't have to wait too long to prune the grape bush and kiwis, because the sap flow starts early. If pruned too late, they can die. The berries can also be pruned in January. Autumn raspberries can be pruned back to the ground.

This is also a good time to make new plans for the garden. Consider crop rotation in the vegetable garden. If vegetables are always in the same place, they are more susceptible to diseases.

You can already order seeds and seed potatoes. This is also the right time to spread lime. If there is a lot of moss growing in the lawn, it is usually a sign that the soil is too acidic. By spreading lime you neutralize the soil. If you want to know exactly the condition of the soil in your garden, you can take a soil sample and have it tested at a garden center.

Regularly check the container plants in the shed for mold and pests. The container plants may also have some water now and then.
