5 tips to make your interior truly personal

Of course, we have our tips and advice, but furnishing a house from floor to ceiling, breathing interior design, and the trends, do's en no and being able to dream of the very best/most beautiful brands, that's a whole different story. So we asked Nicole and Andrea from Atelier ND Interior to their 5 best tips.

Nicole: “For us, an interior never has to be perfect according to a Pinterest mood board. In fact, we prefer it not to be. A house becomes interesting precisely when it is personal, when it contains things you don't see everywhere, and when it is truly created around the people who live there.”

We love unexpected combinations, vintage finds, unique materials, and especially doing things just a little differently. These are five things we really enjoy applying right now.

1. ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

1. ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

As far as we are concerned, art absolutely does not always have to hang neatly on a white wall. In fact, we love placing it in quirky spots: on a cabinet, inside a cabinet, above a fireplace, or even on a mirror.

For example, we have mirrors painted or incorporate art as part of a piece of furniture. It is precisely in such an unexpected place that art gains much more character — and immediately makes an interior more personal and a little quirky.

2. MAKE YOUR FLOOR UNIQUE

2. MAKE YOUR FLOOR UNIQUE

A floor is such a major part of a room, so why make it standard?

We love natural stone and marble and regularly design our own patterns and combinations. By combining different colors, types of stone, or shapes, a floor can become almost a work of art in itself.

It is often these kinds of custom details that make a house look unlike any other. And that is exactly what we want.

3. GIVE VINTAGE A NEW LIFE

3. GIVE VINTAGE A NEW LIFE

Not everything needs to be bought new. A vintage chair from Marktplaats, an old bench, or a simple pouf, in particular, can become fantastic if you have it reupholstered in a special fabric.

We do this ourselves a lot. Sometimes with bold prints, sometimes with an unexpected color or a beautiful tactile fabric. That is how you turn something existing into something that is entirely your own.

And the nice thing: vintage ensures that an interior never feels like everything came from the same store at the same time.

4. WALLPAPERING YOUR CUPBOARD DOORS

4. WALLPAPERING YOUR CUPBOARD DOORS

A trick we now use almost as standard: wallpaper on cupboard doors.

A large wall unit can quickly become very sleek and harsh. By wallpapering the doors, the cabinet becomes softer and blends much more into the interior. We find this particularly beautiful in bedrooms and walk-in closets.

And with a unique pattern, a cabinet can suddenly become one of the nicest elements of the room.

5. CHOOSE VINTAGE LIGHTING

5. CHOOSE VINTAGE LIGHTING

We try to incorporate as much vintage into our interiors as possible anyway, but vintage lamps are a real favorite.

Italian vintage lighting, in particular, is often so beautifully made. The shapes are more distinctive, the materials finer, and the craftsmanship is evident. They are objects with their own character and history—something you simply miss in much new mass-produced items.

Incidentally, a good vintage lamp doesn't have to fit in obediently with the rest at all. It is precisely such an unexpected model that can make a room.

MAKE IT YOURS

MAKE IT YOURS

Ultimately, all five tips come down to the same thing: the more personal a house, the more we like it.

An interior doesn't have to conform to a trend or look like a Pinterest mood board. Collect things you fall in love with. Use art in an odd place. Upholster that old chair in a fantastic fabric. Create a floor that no one else has. Hang up that crazy vintage lamp.

A house should be unique. It should be allowed to be a little edgy, to surprise, and above all, to tell a story about the people who live there.

For us, that is ultimately what a good interior is all about.
