A visit to Café Coos on the Bilderdijkskade is worth the detour
Café Coos in Amsterdam-West is everything you could want if you're craving nostalgia, but with a hip, urban twist. Think: gingerbread with whipped butter, just like Grandma used to serve (but next level!) homemade, say no more), a currant bun with fennel and blueberries that will brighten your day a little, and an interior that feels like a warm hug on a rainy morning. Coos is located on a lovely corner of Kwakersplein and was founded by three tasteful women (two of whom are also sisters).
What sets Café Coos apart from your average corner coffee shop? The details. From the awnings with cozy benches underneath, to the play basket with sidewalk chalk and coloring books for the little ones. Everything is homemade, the coffee is local (Fiveways beans), and even the spreads for your bread come from small-scale artisans. It's like stepping into a mini-deli from another era—but one with Wi-Fi and great music. You can also take some of it home; a few shelves in the front left are reserved for delicious products to buy and enjoy at home.
Inside, it's anything but boring: no white-and-gray minimalism or industrial decor, but a red-and-purple counter, net curtains on the windows, brown cabinets, and an open bakery where the aroma of fresh dough greets you. Here, things can be a little softer, more colorful, and more human. Whether you're there for a quick coffee, a leisurely breakfast, or just want to curl up with a newspaper and strained yogurt (with the most delicious homemade granola), Coos gives you space to settle down.
In short: Coos isn't a place you just rush through for your caffeine fix. It's a place to linger. Gingerbread and currant bun one day, granola the next. You can plan your week here. Going once isn't really enough. And that's exactly the point.
