Coqui Coqui Coba (not far from Tulum, but much more unique), Mexico

Coqui Coqui (pronounced kokkie kokkie) was Tulum's first hotel (okay, there was another one, but that's so insignificant, it doesn't count) and is, not only according to us but according to many, still the tastiest place to retreat – although... No longer in Tulum itself. Ha! No, Coqui Coqui Coba is where you want to be. Coba is a small settlement around a lake about half an hour from Tulum. You pass it (sort of) when driving from Holbox to Tulum. Turn off here, book a room at Coqui Coqui Papholchac Coba Residence & Spa and you forget that you were actually just passing through (forget Tulum: way too busy and American, only restaurant Arca is a must, but you can easily do that from Coba as well).

The hotel feels like a temple, and an overnight stay here is truly a unique experience. Because it is so beautiful – concrete floors, little statues of the Virgin Mary hidden behind the curtain in your wardrobe, numerous different levels allowing you to lie like royalty in your bath or on your bed – but perhaps even more so because it smells so good. An out-of-control hobby of the owner, it turns out: next to the narrow reception area is the hotel shop with chic designer goods and scented candles, home sprays, and perfumes from its own house brand..
