Restaurant De Maaltuin travels to the most special places in the Netherlands (with this edition dining at the house of the Dutch Pope)
From dining in ancient castles to dining among horse stables in the heart of Amsterdam, the culinary experiences of The Maaltuin are always special. We've been there a few times now, and it's been (more than!) great. Because each setting is so different, you can easily attend multiple editions. Each edition feels like a new chapter in an ever-evolving story.
The latest editions take you to places with character: think of the Hollandsche Manage in Amsterdam, the mysterious Wolvenplein Prison in Utrecht, one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands, Doorwerth Castle, and the stately Paushuize, where we ourselves joined in this time. Each location brings together history, gastronomy, and experience.
The Paushuize (Pastor's House) is perhaps one of the most impressive locations De Maaltuin currently occupies. This former city palace of the only Dutch pope, Adrian VI, exudes history. During the evening, you'll stroll through richly decorated rooms, listen to fascinating stories about the house, and enjoy a delicious five-course dinner perfectly tailored to the location. Each dish tells a part of the story, and you'll taste it. Expect surprising combinations, delightful music, and an atmosphere that perfectly matches the grandeur of the building.
From the Utrecht forests to the green heart of Arnhem, you'll find Doorwerth Castle, a castle with eight centuries of history. Here, you'll embark on an interactive journey through time, delving into the lives of its former residents and discovering what the lords and ladies of the castle concocted within the ancient walls.
It's like stepping into a fairytale as you arrive, passing the giant Robinia (wishing tree), with its twisting branches covered in sharp thorns. Then, you'll step through a time machine as you explore the knights' hall and storerooms. Dinner is served! A delicious five-course dinner awaits you in the charming coach house next to the castle.
In Amsterdam, near Vondelpark, lies one of the oldest riding schools. This riding school dates back to 1882, but its history goes back to 1744. What's remarkable is that, despite its location in the heart of the city—a unique location in itself—many people have never heard of it. A well-kept, hidden secret, indeed. Prepare to be amazed by the side-saddle carousel show, a demonstration of classical horsemanship, and of course, a delicious five-course dinner in this unique setting.
