The Hague in Corona time
The catering industry in The Hague has also found ways to keep their doors open in these strange times. Here is a hefty handful of favorites from 070 in a clear row. And: this one is to start with! More is coming very soon, I promise.
Still fairly new in the city (an extensive report and corona-free Pumpernickel content will follow when this period is over), but corona should not spoil the fun at Pumpernickel. While Pumpernickel is normally an attractive and hip - think Kinfolk vibes - restaurant and bakery, in these times they offer the opportunity to pre-order their products from the bakery and pick them up on Wednesday or Saturday. On their site you will find weekly order lists with the range, from freshly baked sourdough or rye bread to rhubarb orange custard tarts, pear pie and apple slippers. Bread and pastry that counts. And also various organic vegetables, fruit, dairy products and eggs from the farm so you can save a visit to the supermarket. Order on time, Pumpernickel will pack it and you will have the freshest croissants ever on your brunch plate on Saturday. pumpernickel.nl
Shopping is still possible! Online, of course. Friends Sanne and Moniek from sisters vintage boutique (that rhymes), started an online shop due to this crisis. On their Insta stories the ladies show off their new acquisitions, which you can immediately buy online. From satin slip dresses to oversized blazers, these ladies have an eye for it and that saves you endlessly scouring second-hand stores.
Vintage-loving Joke - on the edge of the Zeeheldenkwartier - is still happy to welcome you in her beautiful shop full of floral teacups and retro furniture. Only fewer people are allowed in at the same time. Patience is a virtue, and the window display is just as sweet.
Kaafi withdrew with appropriate steps after the first press conference and turned their sign to “closed”. But they only did that to be able to come back 3x as hard and corona-proof, and boy, they did good. In an almost emotional video on Instagram, the coffee maker was removed from its protective cover and the sign was turned back to “open”. They're BACK. And hey. Kaafi pancakes to go seemed like a shame to the owner soggy purpose – points for self-knowledge – so Kaafi presents the “loaded cinnamon bun french toast”. Quite a mouthful, but when you see what you get on your plate, completely justified. A gigantic piece of creamy toast, delivered to your front door in collaboration with UberEats. Together with their good cup of coffee, other sweets or savory brunch delicacies. How about a fried chipotle mac 'n cheese ball with tamarind sauce? Takeaway is also possible, if you want to take a walk through the Prinsestraat.
(soon again) a day trip to The Hague? These are (with a dot!) the three addresses in the Hofstad that you should not miss with the kids: Kids To Go – 3 x The Hague with the kids
In the Prins Hendrikstraat you can go to John & June's on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10:00 and 17:00 for coffee, lunch and cake. Not only cake slices, they also regularly bake whole cakes to pick up for parties and celebrations - we recently saw a black velvet chocolate cake with vanilla cream cheese - so keep an eye on their social media for what's on offer. There are also occasional DIY packages to recreate your own John & June's brownies at home, see Instagram for updates. https://www.instagram.com/lunchroomjohnjunes/
Mermaid vibes at your home with smoothie bowls (acai!) and poke bowls from Mugs & Mermaids to pick up or have delivered (via Thuisbezorgd and Deliveroo). All juices, exciting drinks (tiramisu frappuccino or mermaid ice tea) and cold lattes are still on the menu and can easily be picked up in Torenstraat. There is also self-knowledge at Mugs & Mermaids, and since the mermaid-like Instagram vibes are of paramount importance here, they want to do everything they can to recreate them as best as possible in your home. So bake your mermaid pancakes yourself with their ready-made batter. For €7,50 you have enough for two portions and free delivery in The Hague and surrounding areas.
Op Scheef – Scheveningen for intimates – an unreal idea without busy beach bars around this time of year, but fortunately barista Vinni has opened his Tigershark in the Badhuisstraat for you again. In take-away setup, but still the best bakkies to get us through. And to prevent take-away waste, there are now exclusive Tigershark to go cups that you can borrow for €4 and return the next time you come by (at the door, so the baristas don't have to touch them). You will receive a clean variant on your next coffee to go adventure. And you also contribute to a better world, you dolphin saving hero - says Vinni. Of course, the baristas are also happy to help you with beans and any coffee equipment for home, so that you can also make your own quality coffee there. And if those disco tunes get you inside, you can still make way for the people behind you in the queue with peace of mind, because Tigershark's playlists are on Spotify. tigersharkcoffee
