The best terraces in The Hague

BINGO. The time of year has come again, we can go in full glory terrace hopping and that offers LOTS of festive possibilities. What to do? Correct. A sprint towards the terrace. Hence - very easily - a clear overview of where you can go The Hague this summer (not including Scheveningen, we have one there another list for). Some new news and quite a few golden oldies. Of course in no particular order (at least: starting in the center and ending at the edge of the city).

Hitch Hike

Hitch Hike

Now that the terrace season has fully kicked off again, The Hague has gained a striking and un-Hague-like (nicely refreshing) newcomer: Hitch Hike at Spui 180. Eand a new concept with a fusion from California and Baja California (Mexico). What does that look like in front of you? farm-to-table dishes such as tacos, ceviches, and quesadillas. The cocktail menu is very extensive and very summer proof. Think of spritz in countless flavors and palomas. This is served with a small bowl of fresh truffle-infused  popcorn. We likeDo you really want to order something nice or special? Then order the Hitch Hike specialIt is served on a (real) skateboard. Fully filled with fun snacks, tuna tostadas, crispy avocado and corn dogs, melon-tomato salad, and a salmon bagel. to share. The perfect lunch. Also the blood orange spritzer (with popcorn) is highly recommended.

Café Kiek

Café Kiek

Nowadays, we just want to make everything more difficult (for ourselves). Reserving weeks in advance, a complicated, unreadable menu, and the craziest combinations on your plate. At Café Kiek, none of that is necessary. The café has really only just opened, but is already making a name for itself. Here you'll find plenty of spontaneity and 'simply' good food, without too much fuss. And you can go there from breakfast to dinner. Nice. Truly a must visit this new resort of choice.Want a recommendation? We have one. The mackerel toast. Yum!

Bouzy, The Hague

Bouzy, The Hague

Bouzy is the place to be! This wine bar on the corner of Denneweg is super hip & happening, but of the good kind. The entire team at Bouzy is hard at work building the finest wine collection. Fine wines and good food; one plus one equals two.

Still looking for something to eat? Don't worry, in their wine bar or on the terrace you can enjoy charcuterie, farmhouse cheeses, oysters, and flammkuchen, among other things.

Restaurant Marly's

Restaurant Marly's

Just over six months ago, Restaurant Marly's opened its doors in the former Alpina Bloemen premises on the Fred. There is no sign of that recent opening anymore, as the terrace is invariably packed (weather permitting). The handsome building makes the place very appealing, and the interior and the terrace itself are at least as handsome (and quite pink, too, by the way). We hadn't expected much else from a French restaurant, though. That must surely bring a certain charm with it. Anyway. Marly's? Marly was the Spanish one. rescuethe owners' dog. You will see her presence here and there (such as in the logo). And dogs are, of course, very welcome on the terrace. So what shall we order? Three courses à la carte For 45 euros. Yes, really, it still exists. A classic steak tartare for starters, sea bass as the main course, and crème brûlée for dessert, for example. Add some French wine and you're all set. Bon Appétit!

Walter Benedict, The Hague

Walter Benedict, The Hague

We're staying on Denneweg for a little while longer, because Walter Benedict is always a good choice (but really: always). You can go there for drinks from early morning until late at night. The restaurant has an industrial look and a contemporary atmosphere. Their menu? It overflows with the most delicious dishes. From an extensive breakfast to lunch. Their dishes come from French cuisine. From steak tartare to oysters, a little bit of France in The Hague. Oui, that's what we do it for.

Good Volck, The Hague

Good Volck, The Hague

Good people, again on the Denneweg. Can't help it it's our favorite. This place is popular among local as well as tourist guests. The restaurant offers a wide range of dishes. Including classics from Dutch cuisine.
Also not entirely unimportant is the wine list. The restaurant has a wide selection of wines, but there is also plenty of choice among cocktails and beers. The terrace here is truly lovely. Oh yes, for the red lobsters among us, there is plenty of room in the shade.

Nobelstraat is located less than a 5-minute walk from the city center. On Nobelstraat, you can find the delightful terrace of restaurant ñ. The restaurant is situated on a very cozy street corner and has a romantic atmosphere. ñ is a Spanish restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Spanish tapas. They also love to experiment; think crazy ice cream flavors! Restaurant ñ is a great place to linger and order tapas all evening long, but it is also a suitable spot for a quick bite. It is also a great place to socialize and meet new people.

Café de la Gare

Café de la Gare

Café de la Gare is located on a quiet square in the city center. It is a former coach house that has been transformed into a beer café. With over 180 beers on the menu, there is something tasty for everyone. The terrace is situated in the sun.
Café de la Gara is also known as 'The Hague's hidden gem'. It is easily accessible from the city center, a 20-minute walk. It is also easy to get here by public transport.

Café Banka, The Hague

Café Banka, The Hague

Café Banka is really a café on the old school way. How is the food? Delicious and really high quality. You can come here at any time of the day. For your brunch, lunch, but our honeycomb here, dinner. They have plenty of beers here, but the wine list is unexpectedly large for a café, and the staff knows a lot about it.

Grote Markt (center)

Grote Markt (center)

If you want to get to know the other type of Hagenees, you have to go to the Grote Markt be. There is sun, a great atmosphere, and something for everyone. Ready for a Mediterranean vibe? Head to September (Do you remember..?). Can it be a tad rougher? Time for the Black Rider, where you can stick around in the evening for band performances. Have a leisurely breakfast Zeta, where you can go in the evening for pita, flatbread, or a burger. Or up for a crazy cocktail? Tikibar Vavoom have it all.

CLOOS, Plein (center)

CLOOS, Plein (center)

There are actually only 2 types of Hagenezen: Square visitors and Grote Markt goers. We will not venture into stereotyping, where you sit is up to you, but if you want to sit down on the Square it is CLOS a delicious option. Both the wine list and the food menu are all over the placeFrom Italy, to Thailand and on to Spain.

Restaurant Harper, The Hague

Restaurant Harper, The Hague

Now that we're talking to you about squares, on De Plaats square, there is now restaurant Harper, right in the middle of the Royal shopping district. Nice place to plop down after browsing through the shops. The decor is classy, alternated with modern and that homely feeling. The place where you as a guest will quickly feel at home. A place where you can spend the whole day, from a cup of coffee, to a glass of wine, to an extensive dinner. Say less!

Would you like to know more about Restaurant Harper? We have!

Bleyenberg, Grote Markt (center)

Bleyenberg, Grote Markt (center)

We can spend a lot of time talking about it, but on the roof terrace Blay you are just doing very well. Behind glass for when the wind picks up, or by a heat lamp with a view over the Grote Markt. Actually one of the few roof terraces in the city, especially in terms of good atmosphere, decoration and menu. With a handsome new bar and colorful graffiti, it's definitely worth it! Still too chilly up there? Then you can also sit downstairs in front of the door at a picnic table with goodies from the pink tiled kitchen.

Rootz, Grote Marktstraat (center)

Rootz, Grote Marktstraat (center)

No spot on “the Grote Markt” or in need of a wider beer selection? Around the corner from the Grote Markt stands this old coach house featuring a large terrace. Here you can choose from over 250 Belgian or Dutch beers, including their own Rootz beer.

Little V, Rabbijn Maarsenplein (center)

Little V, Rabbijn Maarsenplein (center)

You might be familiar with this chain, featuring delicious and surprising Vietnamese dishes on the menu. In The Hague, Little V is situated on a sheltered square with a spacious terrace. The cocktail menu is impressive too; the Pornstar Martini is a favorite (passion fruit, instant summer!).

Little V

Jamey Bennett, Place (center)

Jamey Bennett, Place (center)

It is now an indispensable place to live without the Place, and fortunately, because on this cozy square you can sit in the sun and you can visit Jamey all day long. From early in the morning (homemade granola!) to late in the evening (for charcuterie or chic late night snack for example). The dinner menu is a collection of exotic dishes meant to be shared. Although you’d be better off keeping the avocado crab cakes all to yourself (or, of course, just ordering multiple portions). Favorites include the raw, filo pastry tuna pizzas and the salt and pepper squid with ginger, pickled bell peppers, and lemon mayo. Oyster lovers can also indulge themselves at Jamey’s. And we haven’t even started talking about Jamey’s countless gin tonic varieties. The terrace seats 280 people, and in the distance, you can see the Hofvijver. Good luck choosing!

Milú, Driehoekjes (center)

Large terrace next to the Grote Kerk, scaffolding wooden benches and cozy cheerful cushions to curl up with your group of friends. International cuisine with small dishes meant for sharing, and the cocktail menu is not bad either…

Anne & Max + Beergarden, Kerkplein (center)

Anne & Max + Beergarden, Kerkplein (center)

Anne & Max: a living room in the city where you can go for breakfast (from açai bowls to mimosas), coffee, lunch (from pulled chicken bowls to banana bread), cakes (chocolate caramel, raspberry cheesecake, or vanilla coconut tart), and even a charcuterie board. But this “living room” also boasts a lovely terrace overlooking the Grote Kerk and the former city hall. A nice spot. By the way, Anne & Max has three other locations in The Hague.

Pistachio, Prinsestraat (center)

Pistachio, Prinsestraat (center)

You can go here adjacent to the Palace Gardens sip of Pinky Rose lemonade and feasting on various breakfasts, sandwiches, and sweets. How about homemade cheesecake With – yes indeed – pistachio flavor? Also a good place for the persistent person who is on the healthy tour. Pistachio has vegan pastries and plenty of other healthy options on the menu!

Cafe Pistachio

BIT Grill & Café, Buitenhof (center)

Around the corner from the Buitenhof, you will find BIT, connected to The Hague's oldest four-star hotel, Corona (no joke). BIT features a large terrace where you can enjoy yourself all day long, from breakfast to dinner. Too chilly in the evening? Inside, BIT is spacious and modernly furnished, and it is certainly worth a visit!

Anna Paulownaplein (Zeeheldenkwartier)

Anna Paulownaplein (Zeeheldenkwartier)

You can always go to the Anna Paulownaplein, one of the cutest squares in The Hague. Go for delicious tapas and pintxos to the terrace of Bayonne (in the beautiful La Paulowna boutique). You also have a nice time ROOM, or sister the Room Next DoorAt the Mexican PALOMA is also a lovely place to stay (and the spicy Paloma with jalapeno infused Tequila is a really great tip, by the way). Actually, it's just a matter of securing a spot on the square; as far as food and drink is concerned, you're in the right place. Just sit back and enjoy some lovely people-watching in the cozy Zeeheldenkwartier.

Van Kinsbergen, Prins Hendrikplein (Zeeheldenkwartier)

Van Kinsbergen, Prins Hendrikplein (Zeeheldenkwartier)

We will stay in the for a little while longer Zeeheldenkwartier, at the Prince Hendrik Square. Always a pleasant and busy place at Prins Hendrikplein, especially now Van Kinsbergen has put his large terrace on it. Vol. In. The. Sun. Children play in the fountain on the square, you drink beer. Enjoy all kinds of beers on tap (including home-brewed beer) or countless unique imported specialty beers in bottles. With a good snack or a large Van Kinsburger in the evening twister fries or fries with Parmesan and truffle.

Lorelei, Regentesseplein (Regentessekwartier)

Lorelei, Regentesseplein (Regentessekwartier)

Where the sun is just barely peeking over the houses right now and you can still enjoy the lovely afternoon sun… yes, *there*, on Regentesseplein… that’s where Lorelei is located. The menu features mainly Mediterranean dishes and delicious bar snacks (flammkuchen is highly recommended!). But actually, most importantly: damn good wines on the list. They know what they’re talking about at Lorelei, and they are good at guessing what you like. Success guaranteed.

Pumpernickel, Beeklaan (Regentessekwartier)

Pumpernickel, Beeklaan (Regentessekwartier)

Terrace with the coziest little orange parasols that just scream summer. So, Indian summer too, we think. Pompernikkel? Yes, a dark type of rye bread from Germany. And that just sounds so good. Also tasty? Everything from the oven at Pompernikkel. The butter cake with lemon and sea salt, the almond croissants (which they unceremoniously make fresh for you if they initially look like they've run out), the cinnamon rolls, and more. And especially on Fridays, they bake sourdough pizzas served with sour beers. Ooh, we almost forgot to mention the 'Oranjeboven cider', highly recommended x2 (yes, you can have 2 – or 3 – from us, we're not picky).

Pumpernickel

Le Quartier, Van Hoytemastraat (Benoordenhout)

Le Quartier, Van Hoytemastraat (Benoordenhout)

Parisian late summer vibes? You will find that at The neighborhood on a small square in Benoordenhout. Everything here has a French touch: lobster, camembert, steak tartare, or a croque monsieur. Plenty of space here on the terrace. We like that.

The neighborhood

Pan, 2nd Louise de Colignystraat (Bezuidenhout)

Pan, 2nd Louise de Colignystraat (Bezuidenhout)

A bit out of the way for a one-off visit to the city, but if you happen to be hanging out in Bezuidenhout, live in Voorburg, or just fancy a good walk through the city, Pan is the perfect spot to make a quick stop. Quite unexpectedly, right in the middle of a cozy neighborhood on the corner, sits this cute little place (giving us a bit of a Rotterdam vibe) with plenty of space on the terrace. Regularly changing menu, with a bit of everything. A three-minute walk from Laan van NOI station, a ten-minute walk from Central Station.

PuuRR on the Binck

PuuRR on the Binck

How we love PuuRR on the Binck. Reno Hilgersom took over the reins from Capriole, owner of the Hilgersom Horeca Group, two years ago, with no fewer than eight locations to his name. And the concept of PuuRR at the Binck? Just like at the other PuuRR branch. The requirements: a terrace by the water and sun all day long. That is a good start.

Fortunately, we don't have to miss Capriole Café entirely. Part of the interior has been preserved. Lovely, that modern and industrial style that fits the surroundings well. We like.

PuuRR

Glassware, Fokkerkade (Binckhorst)

Glassware, Fokkerkade (Binckhorst)

And literally opposite PuuRR in the Binckhorst sits Glass, where they have now also significantly expanded their terrace with nice corners, tables and glassware (including a nice greenhouse). Here you can have a drink until you weigh an ounce, so it's a wonderful place for a Friday afternoon drink, or an er, whatever-day-of-the-week-you-like-bo.

Greens, Kapelweg (Westbroekpark)

Greens, Kapelweg (Westbroekpark)

If you take a step further away from the city, more towards the coast, you will encounter it Greens, in the green (ha! Duh!) of the WestbroekparkEnjoy a delightful late summer stroll through the gardens of Greens, because Greens is a combination of an organic restaurant and an edible garden. Organic hippie-style? Not at all! It actually results in colorful dishes with edible flowers on your plate. Sandwiches with white fish salad or grilled eggplant, but also a savory tart or tasty snacks. Included matching Organic wines. Plus lots of room for the kids to play. Nice.

De Waterkant, Kapelweg (Westbroekpark)

De Waterkant, Kapelweg (Westbroekpark)

Even more from Westbroekpark that couldn't be missed: De Waterkant, tucked away behind the rose garden, where – by their own account – you are always 10 degrees warmer than in the rest of the city. And if that gets too hot, cooling off is at hand, because at De Waterkant you can rent – Notebook style – the cutest little rowboats to get around Westbroekpark. Not too much fuss at De Waterkant, just simple, cozy tables on a lawn and good sandwiches on the menu.
